Teeth cleaning is the newest vet scam. We’ve been to two vets in two states in the last couple of years and both pushed it.

Must have an insane margin on the mark up.

Dachshunds are one breed that do have teeth issues. That is high, though. There is a lot of variance in vet care prices. Talk around to people you know to see which vet they use and get a second opinion/price.

Dental health in dogs is a real thing. Dogs can have completely rotted out teeth that need to be removed. Usually it's multiple teeth. And for whatever reason, the smaller the breed the more common it is. A dog won't tell you their tooth hurts, the only way they can communicate that is not eating, which a dog isn't going to stop eating unless it's an inch from death.

If you don't want to pay for the procedure, don't. $1200 is a lot of money for something elective for a pet. But don't put down the people who do, or the people who perform it.

My problem is that it isn’t a one time procedure. $1,200 year after year after year is a ridiculous amount to expect people to pay for teeth cleaning.

Give them baby carrots to eat. They help scrape off the tarter

I had a similar price quote once for dental cleaning. I declined. Next year when we went back, they said his teeth looked great. They didn’t even recommend a cleaning.

He’s a dog. Let him be a dog. Miss my boy… RIP.

I know rawhides are considered the devil by most vets and do gooders, but my dogs all get one of those twisted old Roy rawhides in the evening and it seems to do the trick.

My 14 year old dog has never had a problem with her teeth and that’s all I’ve ever done.

I also have an old dachshund and my vet harps on me about a teeth cleaning. But she’s old and idk if it would be worse to let her teeth go or take the risk of sedation.

but this seems over the top. Apparently the procedure requires sedation, but for a nine year old Daschaund, I feel like its risky.

If the vet deems your pet is healthy enough to put under sedation then it is a fairly safe procedure. Dachshunds have notoriously bad teeth and often times in dogs/cats poor dental health can cause other major health concerns.

If they are providing anesthesia, monitoring, extractions, x-rays, etc. then $1200 would be a normal price depending on other factors too.

I wouldn't do 1200 a year either, I think it's absurd. But the idea of a one time cleaning, assuming they've identified some significant issues with the teeth/gums/jaw/skull, where they do a lot more than just clean the teeth, that is not absurd.

Lots of vet practices have been bought out by big arse investment companies the last 5 years or so and they jacked up the prices. It's possible that's what happen at the place you go it.

This.

Stop going to corporate vet clinics where the former owner is now just an employee. Call and ask the. Who owns. I did this in Baton Rouge and it was a long list before I found one locally owned.

I think most people from LA dont go to the dentist and get their teeth clean either.

So it is not surprising they are not bothered by the stank breath and dont care about dental hygiene

In some breeds, failure to take care of teeth can lead to heart problems.
