I bet this included many extractions which is probably very difficult . This thread is full of morons. Why would anyone even continue to see their vet if they didn’t trust their judgement?

Ask for an itomized quote. They’re nickel and diming you with shite they don’t need.
The problem with this is that people just don’t get it done and the animals go without care. And yes, that’s an INSANE number for dental cleaning.

That $600 that bad deal for 5 years with your best friend?
Wait, all have to do is spend $600 once and I get an extra 5 years. Sign me up for that deal
I have gone through putting 4 pets down, dogs and cats. It is just part of life, and you move on. Whenever you say good-bye to one, do not worry there is another out there just looking for a home to give them love.
While I may not seem compassionate here, I have been down the money hole and suck trying to fight cancer in one and diabetes in another. You give them the best life you can, but I learned it is better to say good-bye and help another out in the end.
Maybe you can spend $600 and get 5 extra years, or thousands like I did on cancer and just get less than 2 years. Let life have it's way and do not let them suffer. There are so many animals that will be dead within a year in shelters, and you can give them 10-15 years of life.

There are archeologists who have dug up ancient bags of Purina in the Pyramids in Giza, and the hieroglyphic ingredient lists also included L-Carnitine, L-Tryptophan, Glucosamine Hydrochloride, Avocado, Artificial Turkey Flavor, Maltodextrin, Dried Green Beans, and Beet Powder. They certainly didn't have any issues with dental health...because their bodies evolved to handle this natural diet
The above is the least of my worries of what my dog eats. He eats sticks, poop, dead animals, a pound of fudge one time, plastic, paper, grass, leather, random things I do not even know what they were.

My vet complimented me on my dogs' clean teeth last month. I give them a Greenies treat after I feed them because I hate the smell of dog food breath and one of those chew bones that is supposed to clean their teeth. It is a hell of a lot cheaper than $1200.

Love my dog and make sure she stays up to dates on vaccinations, but this seems over the top. Apparently the procedure requires sedation, but for a nine year old Daschaund, I feel like its risky.
For comparision we pay to have our cat sedated to get her groomed (long hair cat) Its usually around 200 to 250 in the BR area ..so..id be asking what does a cleaning cost them normally and then arse a bit to that. Would 100% get a quote from somewhere else

Could be, could not be. Depends on what they are doing.
A teeth brushing isnt a sedated teeth clean. And that isnt a dental under anesthesia. There could be bloodwork, fluids, x-rays, multiple extractions, local blocks, additional medications, etc. Also does he live in BFE or the middle of downtown Chicago?
There are all sorts of varying degrees of vet care. So just because one place charges one price for a "dental" and another place charges another price does not mean you are getting the same exact service.

Someone had asked where we live. We are 40 miles north of Atlanta. Total estimate was $1,175 and no extractions. We are not having the cleaning done at our vet. Will shop around.
Thanks for the responses. Never thought the post would be five pages.

My previous dog, the vet told us about teeth cleaning. It was something like $400-500 for a teeth cleaning. I said no thanks. 6 months later i go back in for annual shots and a checkup, and the teeth were listed is "perfect/good" condition.
In my opinion, it's a way for the vets to make extra money by selling you unneeded shite.

If someone pays $1200 to have a dog’s teeth cleaned they are too stupid to own a dog.

Lots of vet practices have been bought out by big arse investment companies the last 5 years or so and they jacked up the prices. It's possible that's what happened at the place you go it.
Private equity roll ups control like 75% of the market. It's wild. I used to work for a PE firm that did this. Scary thing is they don't re-brand, so you never know.
And yes, they cut costs and encourage upselling with incentives. We go to a country vet now and first thing I asked was who owned it. Kind of vet that deals with farm dogs more than princess poodles. He's great.
As far as the dog's teeth, have you tried just brushing them? Takes a minute if they fight it, but I eventually get it done. Do it like once a year.

Dogs have lived for thousands of years without cleaning their teeth. What a scam
When they eat what they scavenge their teeth do a bit better. Bones, tough meat, plants, etc. When they eat kibble filled with grain, their teeth rot. And rotting teeth do lead to heart issues and sometimes infections in their mouth which can lead to having to put them down.
Also, dogs in the wild just don't live as long.

Had my 5yo male’s teeth cleaned two weeks ago, it was under $500 and they pulled 14 teeth. Said dachshunds either have beautiful teeth, or terrible teeth. Our female that passed about 3 years ago had the beautiful teeth. This one, stank breath and plaque like crazy.

To give you a point of reference, our 14 year old dachshund just had 25 teeth removed, a procedure that required sedation and took a couple hours of surgery. Bill was $1,300, which felt very fair considering the GF (no pics) paid a good chunk of that amount to have a single tooth removed when we still lived in Chicago.

I also have an old dachshund and my vet harps on me about a teeth cleaning. But she’s old and idk if it would be worse to let her teeth go or take the risk of sedation.
The vet should be able to help you assess the risk. Ours has a heart murmur so we had to go to a canine cardiologist (which unfortunately was a $700 bill) to make sure she was ok to go under. She was, had the surgery, and is much happier now, and her breath doesn't smell like death, but she does have a bit of a snaggleface when her lip gets stuck on her bottom tooth.
Gratuitous picture with snaggleface.
