. I will say most veterinarians tend to actual undersell their skills and abilities out of fear that clients wont pay and animals will suffer

IME it’s more about the welfare of the animal than the practice’s margins or DSO.

And the cherry on top is that the client isn’t mandated to do any of it. It’s a proposal for a recommended course of treatment. Take the dog elsewhere if you feel it’s unreasonable. Oh, but you’ll probably have to pay for another exam. Sort of how it works. Or, roll the dice, and do nothing. Time will tell if you made the right decision.

Again not every situation is the same. What teeth were they? Did you have bloodwork done? Did your vet do x-rays and were they included in the price? This estimate is priced weird, I'll at least say that. But it very clearly shows estimating potentially 10 teeth being removed and 4 of those being major. Aka canines or multi-root teeth. To me it looks like a normal priced dental with a handful of duplicate charges that dont make sense. But this also includes regular x-rays and a workup. AKA this entire estimate is for more than just a normal dental. So this whole argument is dumb. We are clearly missing a lot of the story.

There is no other story. Dog had an annual. Lungs fine, heart fine, etc

Looked at teeth and recommended going under for a cleaning and maybe extraction. That’s it. He’s not pulling 20 gd teeth. Even if he pulled 1 or 2, $900 seems nuts- hence the post.

I’m telling you what the estimate says. It clearly shows $400 of radiographs that aren’t for the teeth.

Plus extraction estimates for minimum 5 teeth and up to 10.

And in house bloodwork plus a geriatric panel. Which you usual run one or the other. Not both.

My vet is my older cousin. He is straight with me in regards to things he can do that cost $$$ but offer minimal return. When he retires I am fricked.

I just paid 215.00 last week in Baton Rouge. Included blood work, and extractions.

Where?

I ask because my veterinarian quoted anywhere from $700 to $900, depending upon any extractions. I'm almost certain my dog won't need any extractions, as I brush her teeth and use a fluoride additive in her water.

They used to charge $250 to $300 two years ago.

I'm not saying this isn't true. But if it is, that vet office is hemorrhaging money.

Cost alone to run bloodwork, depending on the panel, at minimum is $30-$50 and thats IF they are getting buying group pricing.

No vet office could provide those services for that price and stay open.

Meanwhile, this guy is probably charging $1,000 to review a 10
Page document for a client thinking it’s reasonable.

The reason for these outrageous vet bills is because investment firms have been buying up vet clinics and are charging high prices for unnecessary procedures. See if your clinic has been bought up. I was talking to a guy a few months ago who is in the business of buying these things and then scamming people, he said it is a cash cow.

I was wondering the same when I first looked at it, but there's two columns of cost, sort of best and worst case. I imagine if the inhouse blood work shows something questionable, they would send out for the iDexx geriatric panel. Same with the rads, they get in there and start working on teeth and find a mass or something? Really trying to cover their bases so the owner can't say they aren't going to pay you didn't tell me that could happen kind of stuff.

OP, it's your best bud, get the damn dental done.

We went back home to Lafayette. They wanted $1200 here in League City, cost us $200 in Lafayette.

My 18 year old Dachshund had 4 teeth removed and a cleaning. $450. Your vet is a ripoff artist.

And they put your dog under? I'm sorry but it's very risky to put an 18 YO dog under. The amount of pre-work to even consider it would be near 450 dollars cost to the clinic themselves.

Had an estimate for our Golden Doodle for just a cleaning $600. Ankeny, Iowa area. Needless to say, we are going to hold off for a while.

Who owns the clinic? If a corporation has purchased the practice they will charge a premium. Privately owned clinics usually charge less. 3-500 is fair. Your estimate looks like rape from my experience.
