Did I miss where you wrote that your dog has bright pink inflamed gums and has a problem chewing on bones or pigs' ears?

At certain ages, animals have problems with anesthesia. I've always thought "first do no harm".

Our vet said our Aussie was due for a teeth cleaning on one of her annual checkups. The next year, the vet looked at her teeth and asked me where I had had them cleaned. She said her teeth and gums looked really good.

I told her that it didn't have them cleaned, I just saved the rib bones every time I got them at a restaurant and doled them out to the dog one at a time.

There were no more conversations about teeth cleaning.

I have an inside dadchund mixed with terrier and she got some early shots but probably hasn’t been to the vet in several years. I would say around 10 years old, does just fine. I feel like vets have become obscene money makers.

That estimate is completely reasonable for this procedure. It looks like two of the extractions are molars which can take a lot of time. Often these can go a couple hours for even 5 extractions. It is your call whether you wish to do it or not obviously but putting a dog under and removing molars is not an easy task unless they are so far gone basically falling out. Go to your doctor and get put under and see how much that costs . Unpopular opinion but vets don't make a lot compared to their schooling costs...

We have a couple saying these prices are reasonable if they’re going to extract a molar but most are saying ~$400 for the procedure in other areas.

I’m going to call around - perhaps a suburb - and get a better estimate. $1,600 is absolutely stupid.

Spending that amount of money on a pet you can literally find free on the side of the road.

Man, people are dumb.

Please don't have any pets. If you're too cheap to care for them properly just don't get one.. You don't sound like you have the right temperament anyway.

You are trying to explain things that a lot of people in these threads don't actually understand and refuse to acknowledge.

Forget that that are single root teeth, incisors, multi-root teeth, canines, etc. Surgical extractions, and abscesses. Or that dogs can have much larger teeth with deeper roots that are way harder to extract than humans.

According to a lot of posters vets are millionaires.

Right? A rotten single root tooth and a broken molar are completely different procedures in time and complexity. That's more time under, so more drugs and more monitoring not to mention more time by the vet themself. Owe more in vet school costs than house is worth to make less than a plant baw.

hes not getting worked over. They are doing what would be considered the highest level of care. That comes with a cost. A lot of these items could be taken out to reduce cost but at their own risk. If he asks about what could come off they would probably happily explain what items they as a clinic would feel comfortable removing.

Also as i stated it seems like 500-600 of this estimate isn't directly related to the teeth. i would be interested in seeing what else was discussed that isn't being brought up here.

The likelihood they’re still paying off. Add to that their operating expenses, insurance, medical supplies, etc. Expenses aren’t lower because you’re a DVM.
And I’m sorry, but veterinarians are trying to make money too- same as every motherfricker who owns a business or is otherwise working. They don’t enter into some social contract that limits pricing. That’s what their clientele determines. If they think it’s justified and the market will bare it, good on them. The client can always go elsewhere.

this is all very true. I will say most veterinarians tend to actual undersell their skills and abilities out of fear that clients wont pay and animals will suffer. it lends to the type of personality that goes into the profession. I personally think its bad for the profession, but that's a whole different discussion to be had.

My 18 year old Dachshund had 4 teeth removed and a cleaning. $450. Your vet is a ripoff artist.

I use a country vet who is a lot cheaper (and he's really good).

When I was in high school, I picked up what was likely the first Jack Russell ever in Texas. He came over from England. At that time, very few people knew what a Jack Russell was.

We had a foxhunt, and he was sent to us by the MFH of a foxhunt in England.

Again not every situation is the same.

What teeth were they?
Did you have bloodwork done?
Did your vet do x-rays and were they included in the price?

This estimate is priced weird, I'll at least say that. But it very clearly shows estimating potentially 10 teeth being removed and 4 of those being major. Aka canines or multi-root teeth.

To me it looks like a normal priced dental with a handful of duplicate charges that dont make sense. But this also includes regular x-rays and a workup.

AKA this entire estimate is for more than just a normal dental. So this whole argument is dumb. We are clearly missing a lot of the story.

Vet cost are insane. My dog has a swollen tear duct (aka cherry eye). The Vet wants $ 3000 to remove it. Can anybody tell me if this cost is normal? Seems excessive to me.
