There are many posts about the Nutty Putty Cave incident, so I thought I'd post this lesser known story that is also very chilling.
Not near a chilling.

He went out fighting.... and not armed penned head first upside down... like a dirty dauber does to a spider.

My favorite part of caving is that I don't have to do it.

I'm getting jittery and cramped up just reading a couple posts and seeing the thumb nail of that video. No desire to get stuck in a tiny crack in the rocks. Zero

There is a very good book about a nearby cave, Krubera, which is the second deapest cave. At the time the book was written, it was thought to be the deepest. They also talk about Cheve Cave in Mexico. It's a fun read. I'm not a caver, so it was interesting to learn about their explorations of these places, the technology they developed, the time it takes, and the fricking brass balls it takes to do it.

There were likely many ways to ascend with what he had... from a carabiner brake to many generations old (and very simple) hand tied prussics.

How about a hip hop carnival cruise?

Think I may chose cave diving over that.

Yet another reason I dont go caving.

Caving in general won’t kill you. Being a complete dumbass will.

At some point this guy probably desperately missed his family and in the process found the meaning of life. So atleast theres that

Plus the lack of brain cells.

Don't forget how important that is

Why not make stirrups from whatever material he had available. Or, was he missing accendors altogether? The stirrups just attach to the accendors

I've made it through The Natural Bridge Caverns near San Antonio like 5 or 6 times.
I'm a badass...

I had a friend that would go scuba diving in caves. He told me a few close call stories that made me think a person would have to be insane to pursue that as a hobby.

Hard core cavers think cave divers are completely nuts.

2 things here:

Yes I would be making a list and going over it pretty closely, but he might be alive today (or possibly not given being that stupid) if he had just told someone where he was going.

Also, had he made it out- If all I told my wife that I was leaving for a week to find the meaning of life, I would expect to come back to a cave where I used to live.

What an extremely selfish thing to do.

I think this is the key.

Ultimately the root issue is he set up a scenario where a single point of failure is enough to cripple his options.

Same thing would have happened if he hadn’t forgotten them, but the clamps suffered a mechanical failure of some sort mid climb

I believe the video says this was his third time ever caving. He was just completely out of his league.
