Careful assuming genders, judging by the downvoters, this thread is crawling with government lackeys.

They're not losing money. They've prefunded their retirement for 75 yrs out and are having to fund that, which on their fiscal books looks like a loss. The reality is they are making money and meeting their obligations to employees now and in the future. Heaven forbid an employer actually follow through on a promise. Its a bunch of media posturing to try to get more bailout money.

As for the guy bitching about taxpayer waste on page 1, they've been self funded since 1983, zero tax dollars go to USPS, so maybe join us in the 21st century.

Also, USPS isnt designed to be a profitable company...their purpose is to deliver mail to EVERYONE, meaning those who live in some backwater swamp shack, the pillheads in trailers at the bottom of a holler in Eastern KY, etc. UPS, FedEx, Amazon, DHL etc ALL use them to deliver to those areas where it doesnt make $ sense for them to do it.

Rural regions at a disadvantage. Now a letter would cost more than 0.55 to sent across country. While a city could have a cheaper rate

Benefit for the people (but frick us right) is that there is a flat rate for ALL residents within certain specs. A letter using a forever stamp (0.55) from anchorage Alaska to Miami will cost the same as a letter from Manhattan to the Bronx

we can't talk about that here... you just have to point and scream at the losses without looking at what changed.

Free market in food? You mean, the billions in farm subsidies and billions more in protectionist tariffs?

That free market?

America, 2020, doesn't have much of a "free market" in anything.

The military doesn't turn a profit, so we should abolish it.

Look, I'm as small government conservative as they come, and I believe in the idea that "the government should only do what they private sector can't, won't, or shouldn't do".

I think a general mail service falls in that category. I don't think it needs to be 6 days a week.

It always interests me how people decide what "government agencies" should operate at a profit, and which ones don't need to be / should be taxpayer supported.

This part here is what private corporations do daily. Working knowledge of industry and what does/doesn’t work.
Similar scenario in reverse: CPA goes to work for IRS for a few years and then markets themselves or corporations recruit this CPA to run finance because they know what IRS is looking for and how to save them money.
Relative to donor, common for both parties to do this with donors and people they trust.

It was done to intentionally sabotage the service. It isn't actually necessary. People use the profitability as a political talking point when it was deliberately made unprofitable to undermine it. This is what political manipulation looks like.

Not really similar.
IRS does not have a competitor that has the right/obligation to review tax returns for deficiencies AND enforce them.

In this case, the appointed henchmen has a large investment in a direct competitor.

Congress passed a law in 2006 that USPS would have to essentially make retiree health benefits prefunding payments to find the liability "in excess of 50 years"

So... Like Trump is doing now by gutting the system until it bleeds out on top of the crippling USPS received in 2006

I dont think I have ever interacted with a single USPS employee that deserved to have a job let alone retiree benefits packages.

Congress went too soft. Should have simply cut everything.

COVID wasn't a thing last year.

They lost 3.9bn in 2018

5.1bn in 2015

See a trend?

Postal service was established under the constitution, which surely all of you conservatives well know.

It's not there to make money or be run like a business. It's there to serve a vital service to this country and do so cheaply and with decent service. The few billion dollars they lose each year is nothing in when looking at our federal budget, especially when you consider how many Americans it employs and how many businesses and consumers it serves at reasonable prices.
