Maybe his wife does a lot of sports and off-roading. You know, just like every other wife who NEEDS an SUV.

We have a 15 explorer. Got about 80k on it now. Overall it’s been a good car although you can tell ford cheaped out on a good bit. Had some issues with the door panel on the inside coming unglued and some of the weatherstripping is jacked up already.

One of the deciding factors that have me btw the explorer and 4 runner is due to the tax consequences of purchasing the vehicle through my wife's business. They both meet the criteria for 100% depreciation in the year of purchase. Highlanders do not fit the criteria.

We're on our 4th Ford, and all of them have been solid vehicles.

1998 F-150 - sold it with 190k miles on it, with no major problems.
1999 Expedition - sold it with 242k miles on it. Transmission was starting to go when I sold it.
2004 Expedition - sold it with 212k miles. No major problems, but lots of minor ones, mostly electrical.
2012 Edge(current car for wife) - almost 150k miles on it and it hasn't had any major problems. A few electrical issues like the 04 Expedition, though.

I sell used cars for a living. This is pretty simple.

First off, you need to be comparing Explorers and Highlanders. Modern Explorer and modern 4R are apples and oranges.

If you are the type that will drive the vehicle until it simply will not go anymore, buy a Toyota and do not consider the Ford.

If you plan to keep until about 100k then get something else, buy the Explorer. It will be fine until then, and you will save a considerable amount of money on initial purchase.

My wife drives a 2015 Explorer. While it has yet to have any mechanic issues, the number of defects in the body of the vehicle is enough to drive you crazy. Lacks the proper heat guard, causing paint blistering on the hood. Windshield has cheap plastic guards that routinely break and fly off at hwy speeds. Cost $150 each to replace. Touch keypad on door isn't sealed properly, causing it to short out when moisture gathers in it. I could list more, but you get the point.

Get the 4Runner. Avoid the Explorer, seriously.

My mom built and special ordered an Explorer about two years ago, brand new shipped from the Ford factory. She had it about two weeks and it died while driving on I10. Ford fixed it without issue. About a month later the seat stopped moving. Now, the seats in Explorers move back to let you out and move up when you start it so you can drive. She’s like 5’ nothing and couldn’t reach the pedals with the seat back. Brought it back to Ford where it sat for over 4 months because they couldn’t figure out the issue (as a reminder, when both issues started she hadn’t even made a payment on it yet).

We’re now two-ish years later and the roof trim is popping off on both sides and the auto-stop/cruise control distancing feature is messed up from the sensor in the windshield being toast. Every time I see her she bitches about that car and can’t wait to get rid of it.

This is her 4th Explorer in a row and she says she’ll never buy another Ford until she’s put in the ground.

if you've got kids, get a 3rd row Explorer with the 2nd row having Captain's chairs. As they age, life will be MUCH easier.

And go Ford. Every basic mechanic can work on a Ford.

I've had 2 in my life + a '93 4-Runner.
All 3 over 200,000 miles. The older 4-Runner was just smaller. No room for a family of 3+ with or without a dog.

We have a 2018 Ford Explorer. Bought it with about 19k miles on it. We love it. Very spacious and the ride is nice. We have driven it to Disney world and back. It’s not like top of the line luxury for Baton Rouge but it does its job and fits this family of 5 nicely. The only thing I wish we had were the captain seats for the second row.

Had a 2012 Explorer. After 6 years and 45k miles got rid of it due to several recalls and a few costly maintenance issues. Ford trucks are great, Explorer not so.

I like my Explorer. It’s a 2018. Only problem is I know I look like a cop coming down the street from a distance.

I had a 1996 Explorer that I loved. I really didn't want to buy a new one, but by 2015, I figured I should. It was still in great shape, no big problems ever.

I bought a 2015 Explorer which I still have. Looks brand new. Love it. The dealership keeps calling me to trade mine in and get a new one because they need some used ones to sell. No deal.

I am on my third explorer. Paid 8k in 2007 for one that lasted until 2013. It was a 2000 V8 4x4. Good vehicle. The next was a 2002 V8 4x4. Paid 3200 for it. It lasted about four years and only had 130k miles on it. The engine would just completely shut off while I was driving. Happened twice and could have gotten me killed so sold it to some meth head from winston salem for 2k in 2017. Got a 2010 Eddie Bauer V8 4x4. Has been pretty good and got it for 10k. Had about 120k miles on it. I'd say expect a $500-$600 repair bill every six months or so on an explorer.

With that said the explorers meet a solid price point and aren't bad vehicles to have at all but they definitely don't take the wear and tear or hold their value like a 4 runner. Once they start to near the 180-200k mile mark they completed break down or have in my experience.
