Considering the purchase of a used SUV and have narrowed down to a Ford Explorer or a Toyota 4 Runner. Have been a die hard Toyota guy for years but the prices on used Toyota vehicles are making me consider the Explorer. For consideration, the vehicles are similarly priced new but I can purchase a 2019 explorer with about 30K miles for roughly the same price as a 2014-2015 4Runner with 75K miles. Have never owned a Ford. Trying to make the decision.

Ford makes good cars, I don’t think you would be disappointed with an Explorer

Just get the minivan. It’s what you need.

4 Runner and Explorer are both smaller than what you think on the inside. Make sure that’s really what you want/need before you buy it.

It will still be valuable when you go to sell.

The previous gen Explorer was riddled with issues.

Get the 4runner.

Dont buy low mileage used 4Runners.

Buy them new or buy them old, not in between.

4Runner all the way.

Also, the Explorer is more of a Highlander/Sienna competitor. Very different animal than the 4Runner.

We were in the exact same situation about 3 years ago. Ended up getting the Ford at 30k miles vs the Toyota. So far, we haven't had any real issues. I have to replace the vent actuator for the AC and the the plastic trim underneath has been an issue but aside from that it's been a great vehicle. It has about 90k on it now and its paid off.

You really cant go wrong with the Toyota but we have been very happy with our Explorer purchase.

If you plan on keeping the car for a long time, get the 4Runner. We've had good luck with our Ford Edge that has 175k miles on it though, so Fords aren't terrible vehicles. Not as familiar with the Explorer, though I will say the Edge, while smaller, is a more comfortable ride than our 4Runner. Our 4Runner is 2005 model though, so can't speak to the newer ones.

The Explorer is a crossover while the 4Runner is a body on frame SUV. They are in completely different classes and will ride very differently. Odds are since it’s for your wife she won’t be doing any off-roading and will have no need for a true SUV like the 4Runner. Explorer is probably more what the needs and she will like the ride a lot better.

I say this as someone who owns multiple 4Runners.

I drive a 2016 Explorer for work and my wife's car is a 2016 4runner. The explorer does feel roomier inside. I like the look of the 4runner better. I love that the resale on the 4runner is 35% higher with comparable options.

Why do people think the 4runner and Explorer are in the same category? The Explorer and Highlander is what you should be compare.

We have a 2018 Explorer XLT. The wife and I love it. Great technology and very comfortable. I recommend.
