That's not entirely why. They save tons of money on fuel because of it too. Less waiting at red lights = huge savings.

Yeps. It's just like some drivers who take a certain way to avoid sitting at a light to turn left.

UPS may have been first to do it on a large scale. but most delivery dispatch systems do employ algorithms to minimize left turns at intersections.

wonder if it works? You'd think UPS would have the data to back up the policy showing it does.

It does work. When it first came about decades ago, it was celebrated as one of the first big instances of computers being used to simulate millions of possible scenarios and pick out the best. If the programmers limited left turns in their simulations, it saved millions of dollars.

It isn't "never"...the routes are designed to eliminate as many left turns as possible, in-particular unprotected left turns.

I try to turn right and minimize left turns as much as I can when driving myself. I can't stand idiots who block everyone at a light trying to turn left when they could have gone a different way and made an easy right turn.

That's unprotected left turns. If it's a light with an arrow then no big deal. But I hate idiots who try to turn left from a random point on a two lane street or a light with no arrow so it blocks everyone.

State St at Highland Rd near LSU's campus is a bad place for this. Nicholson at Brightside too but they're in the process of fixing that intersection.

They are also "encouraged" not to use reverse some situations require it but they are encouraged and some if not all trucks are monitored for such things

It likely reduces wasting gas, and therefore money, while idling waiting to turn left.

Sort of true. Its so they rarely have to wait at lights to wait for the green arrow or wait for traffic to take a left. Right on red everywhere, my dude.

The driver’s route/delivery stops are mapped out ahead of time to maximize timeliness/efficiency

Levis is talking about Orion, a software program that UPS introduced in 2008 and has tweaked every year since then. By guiding drivers to avoid left turns whenever possible, Orion has cut the average UPS route by 6 to 8 miles, saving the delivery behemoth some $300 to $400 million each year in gas, salaries and vehicle upkeep.

It cuts down on red lights and saves them milage which = $$ saved

They can't all follow this. The way the UPS truck comes down my street the only way he can turn is left.

Perfect company for New Orleans where every intersection is no left turn.

My wife never turns left, and I mean never. She will go miles out of her way if need be. At least she knows her limitations.
