A good friend of mine who has your background got into a bad spot during a tournament at Toledo bend years back. They hit really bad chop later in the evening on the way back and had an engine malfunction. It was pretty cold and after drifting a few hours he saw a light on shore, he got out of his boat and swamp to that camp in the middle of the night. His boat ended up sinking.

I very much doubt this is what happened. I can almost guarantee you it involved speeds over 50 mph. That lakes big but not that big. The guy shouldn't be all that far from the boat, especially in a shallow lake like that. They were likely going way too fast and flipped the boat, hit something, or otherwise crashed that separated them.
The other possibility is one of the guys swam away purposely toward a light or something.
Situation like that on a lake, you never ever leave the boat.

bass boats are heavy as shite and submarine big waves rather then float on top of them. went fishing the marsh with a guy in one on a "decent" day and still had water come over the bow and wash through it 3 different times from just going over boat wakes
its really easy for any bass boat driving way too fast in rough water to hit a wave and then spear into the water after wave, wall of water goes over boat as it torpedoes underwater knocking everyone and everything in the water. in freezing cold water you drown very fast and hit you head on anything you may not even know what happened as your under water drowning.
this is where inflatable vests can fail you, regular vests arent as comfortable but unlike inflatables, they always will work

Like I said earlier, they had south west winds at 20 MPH and they were on the main lake. If they were running 50 MPH, that would be some kind of new record or something.
I was not there but I very seriously doubt that happened. I have fished in 20 mph winds atleast 100 times and not once could I have ever gotten to 50 mph without sinking
Bass boats are fast but not made to run in 4-5 foot waves

So much wrong in this post.
Mine weighs 1300 lbs and the motor is 500 lbs.
Water coming over the bow in the marsh, bullshite unless you were riding with Ray Charles.
