I understand the UK holding all the cards if they are the ones footing the bill for the childs care.
But if the parents are offering to pay for the additional care, it seems crazy the UK has any say here

Italy has already ensured they are covering healthcare costs.
Italy has gone as far as granting Alfie Italian citizenship, so that if he does die in the UK, Italy can file a complaint with the EU against the UK government for murdering an Italian citizen.

It's such a fricking shame that the UK as gone from what it was to what it is. Those were some bad arse world conquering tea sipping chaps up until post WWII. I dont understand how the majority are supporting it. Everyone I've ever met from the UK was a hard working sensible guy.

Considering this current Pope's personality, I would like to see him just show up at the Hospital and say "We are taking this child, stop me".

I doubt they would shoot/arrest the parent's and Italian doctors if they forcefully removed Alfie form the hospital.
ETA: If they did, I have to believe there would undoubtedly be a violent uprising in the UK shortly after.
