United is replacing the 747-400 with the 777-300ER
Delta is replacing their 747-400s with the new Airbus A350 and the 777-200ER.
American's preferred long range jet is the 777-200ER and 777-300ER.

as far as I know, the 777 could be configured that way, the airlines generally make more on freight than people on the long haul flights

No. Boeing still makes a passenger version of the 747-8. American-based Airlines just haven't bought any. The Airbus A380 is also a very slow seller and hasn't been purchased by an American based passenger airlines. There is no cargo version of the A380.
The cargo version of the 747-8 will likely mean that it stays in production longer than the A380.

now that they've gotten the bugs worked out of it it's one of the most efficient and productive long haul jets in the business

I flew on one a few months ago and sat just in front of the wing. It's insane how much the wing tips flex up during flight.

There were a bunch of 747's at Heathrow a few months ago, but it's been a long time since I've seen one in the States. And 40+ years since I rode one.

The -10 series and new 77X will be Boeing's new standard bearer for decades.
DL management, just like NW, has sold their future lr/vlr soul to Airbus.

The first commercial 747 flight for UA was SFO-HNL. They chose to commemorate that.
Would have liked to have flown up top on one before they went away. I've flown on the top deck of the A380, but that was only business class.

I have flown internationally to Europe and Asia on all of the jumbo jets (except the Airbus 380) and the 747 is by far my favorite jet to experience especially in the "upstairs" cabin which is usually the business class cabin on international flights.
