United Airlines will fly passengers on its Boeing 747 for the last time Tuesday.
The carrier is operating one last flight on the iconic jumbo jet, a specially scheduled “farewell” flight from San Francisco to Honolulu operating as United Flight 747. The flight will be United’s final passenger flight on the 747 before retiring the plane.
That will end the iconic plane’s 47-year run at United, which took its first version of the jet in 1970.
The Final Delta 747 flight will occur on December 15 between Detroit and Seoul.

Tuesday, both myself and TPG Editor-at-Large Zach Honig will be flying United’s last-ever commercial Boeing 747 flight from San Francisco (SFO) to Honolulu (HNL). While it’s sure to be a fun event, we’re both going to be sad when the flight, and United’s 47-year run with the 747, come to an end.
Now, Delta, the other major US carrier to operate 747s, has shared the dates on which it’ll operate its final flights on the Queen of the Skies. If you want to get on board, you’re going to have to make quite a trek — the final flights will be long-haul international routes, with the first departing the US from Detroit (DTW) bound for Seoul (ICN) on Friday, December 15. The final flight will depart from ICN and arrive in DTW on Sunday, December 17.
Most 747-8 orders have been for the freighter version. Cathay Pacific and Lufthansa both have a fleet of the new 747-8i, but otherwise the passenger variants have been very slow selling. American based airlines seem to prefer the 777, 787, and even the new A350.

I've never gotten to fly in one and it's my favorite

awesome jet
ETA: they did a flyby with it at the SFO airshow recently, pretty cool

They should beat up a passenger and drag him off the plane to commemorate this historic flight

Always loved the 747. Sad that I'll probably never get to fly on one.

So nothing is actually replacing it? It's just that American airliners perfer other planes.

Sad day, flew on one from LAX to Brisbane and it was a nice ride, never got to go upstairs on one though... I'm curious why united is doing it on SFO-HNL and not SFO-ORD or SFO-IAD for a hub to hub route

Something about that photo creepy's me out. But also makes me think of team deathmatch GTA5.

Like many of the great aircraft of the past, it is time to move on. It served well and will be missed by many.

Delta inherited a fleet of 747-400s when they acquired Northwest Airlines.
I was able to fly on one of them between CDG and DTW in 2015. It was smooth, comfortable, and completed the trip in about an hour less time than the A330 I took on a similar trip earlier that year.
My flight was that particular pilot's last flight before retirement.

Same here. Really wanted to fly in one of those big mofos.

Wow, I thought those planes still had long lives ahead of them. Never had the chance to fly in one.

they could fly indefinitely, they've just been obsolesced by newer, more efficient two engine wide bodies

Did it from Shanghai to Chicago.
Going up the stairs is cool, but United business class sucks, as you may well know.
Still better than being in Econ on that long of a flight though.

So are the Airbus's the only double deckers now?
