re: United Airline's Final Boeing 747 flight is today

I remember the publicity when they first came out and it was about five years before I flew in one. I remember how surprised I was at how BIG the space was for economy class and how high the ceiling was.
It was a couple of years later (either at JFK or at Gatwick) when I looked out the window of my 747 and saw nothing but 747s lined up at loading dock after loading dock, almost each one with a different airline tail paint than the next. It was so damned impressive.
I did get to travel up in the raised part on an Air France flight from Nice to Houston. It didn't feel special because the ceiling was relatively low. And then you pull into an airport and feel like you're in a skyscraper looking down on all the people down on the ground.
Does McDonald Douglas still make 1011s?

That's interesting considering most airlines have brought first/business class prices down in order to monetize them. Hence, why upgrades/awards are becoming more sparse.

And it's been a couple decades since they were rolled off an assembly line.

Thank you for the correction. I have very fond and sad memories of the 1011 seat configurations when my Father was dying in Virginia, for several months every other weekend I caught a red-eye from Houston to DC and they were so empty that I got to sleep on the five seat center area.

USAF still has what I think are DC-10s stationed at Oklahoma City. Big wide bodies with the third engine on the tail.

You can still do it with Korean Air, Lufthansa and Air China although it's the longer and more brand new 747-8.
