LONDON (AP) — Britain announced Tuesday that it plans to ban the sale of new gas and diesel cars by 2035 — five years earlier than its previous target — in a bid to speed up efforts to tackle climate change.

The announcement was timed to coincide with the launch of Britain’s plans for the United Nations’ climate summit, known as COP26, which is scheduled to be held in Glasgow in November.

The U.K.’s new 2035 target for ending gas and diesel car sales is one of the world’s more ambitious. Several countries, including France, plan to stop by 2040. Norway — one of the most aggressive early adopters of electric cars — has a goal, but not a requirement, to eliminate petrol and diesel cars, excluding hybrids, by 2025.

The U.K. says it will bring in a ban on fossil-fuel cars and vans even earlier than 2035 “if a faster transition is feasible.” The ban will also include hybrid vehicles.

Ah yes, we love using the government to ban things until it's something that we like.

Meh, scientists and engineers will find a way for people to get around.
Plus, it's still 15 years away. An answer will be found

In 15 years all new cars will be electric? No chance.

One of two things will happen:
Either this will become a reality or it won't.
If the law requires it and car companies figure out a feasible way for it to be, there you go.
Or, they won't and then these countries will have to modify their laws.
But, by creating these laws, IMO, the automotive industry will try to comply

This is going to piss the Jaguar engineers off royally.

Now they have to figure out how to make an electric motor leak oil.

It's an announcement to give the appearance the government is serious about climate change but the ban will not happen in 2035 or even 2050. In short, its bullshite.

Is the UK government going to give subsidies to the people that can’t afford the ridiculously priced EMVs? Can’t see how this benefits the people if free market doesn’t catch up to electric cars.

On an island nation, maybe. They can have rail travel all over the place.

Sold in the UK?

Sure why not?

All of the major car manufacturers already have electric only options in their retail line up.

If you can’t afford a 30k car, you probably shouldn’t be looking to buy new.

You need to get out more. Try to venture out some so that you can gain some fresh perspective on life.

FWIW the Fremont California Tesla plant is currently churning out more electric cars per week than the plant ever did under previous GM ownership.
