Electric cars have drawbacks, namely range, refuelling, cold weather performance, that are unique the battery-electric motor paradigm, which render them unsuitable for many people.

There aren't the raw materials in the ground to make enough batteries to go all electric.
Just cannot happen.
This is without accounting for infrastructure, cost, etc.

Figuring out a way to move away from finite materials for an energy source is the goal. Reducing the value of oil helps in more ways than just the environment.
I should have directed my sarcastic post to you, it seems.
All that metals mining to make batteries is good for the environment, eh?

Grid investments would be massive.

We're talking about building 5 more gigafactories and somehow scaling up, by several hundred percent, the entire worldwide supply chain of lithium from the mines to final product in fifteen years. Just to supply the cars the UK buys in one year.
Ah, so you weren’t aware that they can make high capacity batteries without lithium.
Gotcha.
Also, I guess you aren’t aware of the recent breakthroughs in lithium-sulfur tech, which would cut your estimated lithium consumption needs in half.

Battery production is just as bad, if not worse than oil production.
Posted on 2/5/20 at 8:19 pm to Street Hawk
Very few people will be buying new ICE cars by 2035, especially in Europe anyway.

Correct, not to mention all those plastics that make up the interior of cars and a lot of engine parts.......plastics made of oil byproducts.
People are so delusional about this electric car horseshite

I guess you aren't aware of the vast difference between something achieved in a lab and something scaleable to feasible mass production. Come on, you may think you know something but let's put your scientific and engineering illiteracy on display here. Lithium consuption needs? You do realize that the most scaleable technologies suitable for common automotive usage are looking at ways to increase lithium concentrations to overcome performance issues while figuring out way to offset the negative consequences in Li-S cells when more lithium is used? Oh, you didn't know that?

At what cost?
It’s actually cheaper at equivalent economy’s of scale.

I guess you weren’t aware of how long the industry has been pushing research into this: this isn’t the initial pie of the sky predictions. This is end stage refinement. The thing I’m referring to has already generated functional prototypes at a pilot plant. Independent of that, Sony is starting the flip away from Li-ion next year.

Right. I did. Hence the breakthrough. They are using a quarter of lithium for equivalent energy storage, and real world deployment field tests starts in 6 months in Australia’s solar farm banks.

Or the government will simply seize all automobiles that have internal combustion engines.
