My advice. Talk to a lawyer!!
This. You need to see an elder law attorney before you try to navigate this on your own.

We tried this for my Mom. $25/hr for 8hrs/day x 30 days = $6K/ month.
I guarantee you can find people to sit with her and help out for way less than $25/hr. It may not be a medical professional… but someone that can help her to the bathroom and call an ambulance if necessary. Find somebody that wants to get out of a fast food job and offer them $12 hr cash. It’s not ideal but still better than having to sell your house and take funds away from your children.

We looked into a nursing home which is roughly $8000 a month. She’s 71 and her total retirement income is around $3000 monthly. I applied for Medicaid and even though she can’t even cover half a months stay at the nursing home, they said she makes too much to qualify.
Depending on which state you live in, look into a Miller Trust. It’s also known as a Qualified Income Trust.
A Miller Trust does this:
* An attorney prepares an irrevocable trust.
* A special bank account is opened in the trust’s name.
* Some of the person’s monthly income is deposited into that account each month.
* Medicaid no longer counts that deposited income when determining eligibility, provided the trust follows state rules.

Isn’t there a five year look back?

And how much is that gonna cost? OP needs funds, not having to shell out funds.

Sorry to hear of your situation; as someone said, your first responsibility are your kids.
The details I don’t know how you get there and it’s too sad a situation to make a joke about. Good luck.

What state are you in? I am very familiar with the Mississippi long term Medicaid laws. There are no income “limits”. She, if approved, for Medicaid would pay her $3000 to the nursing home each month and Medicaid would cover the rest.
Now, there is a resource limit which she may be over. In Mississippi, it’s $4000. That includes all
bank accounts, retirement accounts, etc, and is probably what you are referring to. And with long term care Medicaid, there’s a five year look back, and if you haven’t been preparing for it, you are screwed.
Does she have any children that draw disability?

What is her $3000/mo retirement income being used for right now if she’s living with you?

Kinda similar situation here. You said she needs 24/7 care. What's her condition? That kind of care should have a diagnosis. Her doctor should be able to "prescribe" some form of care/assistance through Medicare as part of her condition. If you don't mind the govt seizing all her asset, that should get her into some kind of home. My dad passed recently and he was caretaker for my mom, who has dementia. We were woefully unprepared and are still struggling to work through all the issues, legal control of their assets to maintain her care. My brother, sister and I keep her a week at a time 24/7 for now. We've been able to hire people my dad used for under $25/hr to smooth out the schedule. It sucks and I feel for you bro. Best of luck

You apply to a home. Medicaid pays. They will take all of her assets.

Call attorney Pete Losavio before you do anything.

Look into a residential group home..they have them in houses where a caregiver or 2 watches 6 to 8 patients, serve them meals, etc. They live there like a nursing home, but it is a residential home and usually quite a bit less...

Whatever it costs for a consult and some basic advice will be worth every penny.

I think I know a decent amount, but I’m no expert, but I don’t remember reading anywhere that says honor your children. I do remember reading where it says honor your mother and father.

They get to a point that we cannot take care of them. We dont have the medical training or In my case the strength. I think you have to exhaust their money and then qualify for financial help. There are other places that cost less but aren't as nice. Modern medicine has extended our life spans but at what cost to everyone involved.

Find a home that takes Medicare and they take whatever your mom has in her name within the last five years but then she lives there and they cover it. If her name is on the house then they get it
