simple question, is it harder to get a job that covers basic living expenses now vs 30 years ago?

This board loves to bitch about the current generation but I personally believe this generation has it the worst. Technology changed too quickly and education didn't catch up in time.

I've seen plenty of stats posted on this board that say the answer is true.

basic living? I think people who make $50k and above can make a basic living and do ok. Jobs at that level are plentiful.

Now if youre saying 350k+ house note, range rover note, f250 king ranch note, hunting and/or fishing camp, private school for 2+ kids, 2 REAL vacations a year, etc, etc..... youre looking at needing around $150-200k house hold income a year. This is def not the norm but also not unattainable.

If you make $120k and your spouse is making around 40-60 then youre doing fine.

Actual basic living? False

But nowadays, most people think "basic living" includes cable TV, a new car, 50in tv, hbo, PS4, etc...

Basic living expenses is highly subjective. You might say $800 for an apartment is basic and reasonable but I say if your job pays shite, find roommates until you make more money.

I'd say true. We never really recovered from the 08 crash. A lot of the jobs created under Obama were service industry and part time. The economy is still barely growing.

ETA - this is the first time in US history that we've gone 10 years without hitting 3% growth in GDP

There are an absolutely crazy ton of job openings out there today.

However, wage growth has been just crappy for a long, long time so many of the jobs pay crap.

So, I guess I'd have to say yes.

Compared to 30 years ago, my in-laws could afford a house (tripled in value since,) two cars and still had money to feed the family and go on a decent vacation each year.

The answer is still false to me but that's because basic living means something different to each person. I don't think a cell phone is part of basic living where as some others would disagree.

ETA: I should have said iPhone or smart phone is not required for basic living.

The living wage for BR is $10.76 for a single person.

Living Wage Calculator

While I'm sure it was easier in the past to make the living wage of an area, I'd hardly call $10.76 "hard".

Nailed it. What I have figured out after giving up my guaranteed paycheck in a government job is that realistic chance of making real money comes with risk. My risk was going into the private sector and working for myself. The guarantee of a steady paycheck is gone, but the ability to go out and keep what I kill has eliminated the hard ceiling of that steady check.

When you enjoy your work the cable and other time killers are not as important. Traveling with the family is better than anything on TV anyways.

"Basic living" 30 years ago meant something completely different than what it means today, so it is hard to do an apples to apples comparison.

I disagree. To hold a job, you must have a phone.

False.

People refuse to rise up to the challenge required to get a well paying job.

Teachers make 50-55k here in DFW. Teachers.

False - but the definition of "standard living" has been distorted and the ditch digging jobs don't pay as well as welfare, snap, wic, disability, etc. so the incentive to preform these jobs is gone.

I think it's partially true. There is less opportunity for unskilled workers than maybe ever before. Most decent paying jobs today will require additional training

The definition of basic living has changed over time. Despite what the OT tells you, you can still live a decent life on a modest income.

IF you have the experience/education or the want to take a manual labor type job you find something

But if you have a junk degree and no work experience. it will be hard.

And there are tons of openings in construction/industrial trades, but you have to have the want to take them

my company cannot hire enough plumber/pipe-fitters. an experienced plumber/pipefitter gets over $50k/year + health ins/401k with possibilities of overtime to up their income.... and we still cant get enough people. and this is on the commercial side, not industrial

In todays society I would have to say a cell phone is basic living....due to the fact hardly anyone uses a land line now a days.

Edit: To clarify....cell phone does not equal smart phone.
