PONCHATOULA—Ponchatoula Police Chief Bry Layrisson said one man has been taken by ambulance to North Oaks Medical Center after a northbound Amtrak train struck a passenger truck on the driver’s side door around noon on Wednesday. Layrisson said initial reports indicate the white Chevy Denali truck was towing a boat westbound on LA 22 when it got “caught” on the tracks, trapped by the closing railroad cross-arms.

Did the truck nuts make it unscathed?

That Amtrak route has to have some of the highest collision rates in the country.

When I was in Louisiana many moons ago South La. did not have these...do they now?

Does insurance cover stupidity? Hard to pull that off without trying.

Like hell Im getting "trapped" between the arms. Even if I was in a Prius I bet I could break the arms off before getting mashed by a train.
What the hell were they thinking?

The majority of the major crossings do

Yes, they have crossing arms on all RR crossings. I can remember a family getting killed in Ponchatoula around 20 years ago because there was no crossing guard. Since then, they’ve shut those crossings down. Instead of 5 crossings in Ponchatoula, there’s now 3.

Why didn't he break the gate? I thought they were breakaway?

So, dumbass was trying to beat the train?

That's what I'm wondering. The dude had almost $100k in personal property on the line and simply wouldn't push passed the gate?

It's illegal to break those arms. He didn't want to get a ticket because it increases your insurance premiums.

Article says it’s a chevy denali.
That thing is one of a kind.

The easy excuse would have been that the grade of the crossing was such that the tongue of the trailer bottomed out on rails and trapped the boat on one side and the truck on the other.
But that's not a huge boat hauled by a pro. boat hauler. Lower chassis clearance doesn't look to the be problem.
