I have a 2018, V6, quad cab, loaded, I think I paid $32k, 0% financing, and will have it paid off this year. Trade in had gotten up to over $36k, but now down closer to $33,500.
I would personally stay away from the V4 mostly due to resale. If you have the choice, go V6.
But this is my 2nd Tacoma. I have zero issues with it. It starts every time, runs well, and never had any repair issues whatsoever. It’s probably not the smoothest ride (but much better than earlier models). And it’s not a super fancy interior like some other trucks. But damn, it’s dependable and holds its value.
I think I’m gonna pay it off and just keep it and save my monthly note. Tempting to trade in and put $33k down on a new one. But seriously, mine still feels new after 3 years. And like all vehicles, now, new ones are overpriced.

2009 TRD Sport Double Cab. 161k. Only ever changed the oil every 3500 miles. 2 tire changes.
Ride is not great.
Technology is lacking.
Some electronics inside not working.
Everything else has held up great.
Likely has another 10 years in her for me easily.
Upgraded from a 99’ to the 2009. Gave the 99’ to a family friend. It also ran for another 150k.

Picked up a 2022 TRD off road Friday. Traded in a Ram with 5.7. Obvious more power in the bigger truck. Got this for my boy to learn how to drive. I will “borrow” it for 2 years and reevaluate my needs when I give it to him. I rarely had anyone with me in the ram and was looking to downsize. Seems like a nice solid truck and it actually fits in a parking spot. Comparable new larger trucks are ridiculously priced.

For a small truck the Tacoma's gas mileage is terrible so you lose the resale value at the pump paying extra for fuel.

I have a 2016 SR5 with the V6 and I love the truck overall but I hate the transmission. It's paid for though so I'll probably drive it until the wheels fall off.

Like the old 4.0L V6, the 4 cylinder Tacoma does not have high pressure DI and some of the other modern gimmicks that the new 3.5L v6 has. So it will probably last longer.
But you have to be okay with very leisure acceleration.
I’d get the v6 but I have to occasionally tow a trailer. Note that you can get the 4.0L still in the 4Runner.

My 2006 has never had a break down. Only part that needed changing so far that isn't normal wear was the u joints.

This. I have a 2012 4.0 V6 Prerunner with 102k miles on it and that truck has been good to me. Personally love the look of that year model. I installed new head lights bc around year 8 my head lights started to get that foggy look and I hated it. Couldn't buff it out so just got entirely new head lights. There was one issue with the emissions control system or some shite that would've been a $2k fix, but toyota covered like 90% of the cost bc it was a warranty item at the time.

Did they put turbos on these 4 cylinders.
If so, I’d opt for a nationally aspirated 6.
Worse economy, but much lower maintenance with a longer life.

Ever see a gang of skinnys tearing up the desert with a 50 cal mounted to the back of a truck that has 300,000 miles on it? Thats a tacoma. I’m on my 2nd one and absolutely love it for exactly what you described. If i had a boat or towed anything frequently, it would likely not do the trick, but for what you’re looking at, its great. Good value retention too.

Why would I pay an extra $20k for something that I don’t need at all? Did your real truck come with an attachable, normal sized penis?
Went to Toyota website and “built” what I want with the V6 instead of the I4. Price difference was minimal between a new 2022 and the 2020 I was looking at. Waiting on response from dealer.

We own a 2019 Tacoma double cab 6ft bed with a v6 engine, I wish it was stronger.
I can haul the everyday things you would (trailer, boat, etc) but man can't imagine the i4 doing it without having to push it on the gas.
