It doesn’t even have CarPlay? Not even as an option?
WTF Toyota? Are they even trying? Some shite is just expected in a car these days.

It baffles my mind that the American public would rather pay $85k for an absolute hunk of shite GM product over one of these beauties.

Land Cruiser buyers don’t really do hardcore off roading in the US like you see people with the 70 series rigs do overseas. It’s turned into a heavy luxury vehicle with off road hardware.
Yeah there are a lot of places in this world where you need a car that you can take offroad daily over some harsh arse stuff.
The cars that do it also cost a couple thousand dollars brand new in the right markets.
Import rules suck

Range Rover to the Land Crusier
Two different animals.
I remember when we got our first posh Range Rover. First four wheel vehicle with the screen, limited voice control (we're talking 2007), and cute little luxury car nicities.
Leather was lovely, rode like a well heeled school bus with an appetite.
A eunuch compared to our previous Range Rovers (sorry, forgot to mention we also had that lovely 1990s beast), and we certainly didn't dare explore areas where we typically put the Discoverys.

Only because they still won't import a freaking 70 Series to the U.S.
I wish. Thing is after they would sell the initial batch to guys like us, the market would probably run dry after a few years. People say they want a bare bones do it all land cruiser, but I don’t see it. Even though the 4 runner doesn’t have the big D energy a LC has, the TRD pro will come with all the gizmos and electronics that soccer moms want for a price similar to a 70 series. 50k for old school, manual transmissioned, work horse, or for a mall crawler with air conditioned floor mats or some such? We ain’t gonna win that one.

That one company has 60% market share in the full sized SUV segment with some of the most loyal buyers in the industry. Maybe the products they are selling aren’t that bad?

4,000 units a year
Wow. That number seems impossibly low. They sell just 11 per day across the entire country.

The only option at the moment (if you want to maintain factory touchscreen function) is buying a retrofit $1K+ headunit from Australia and it's not a perfect solution. Crazy. Toyota is pretty stubborn about being a late tech adopter, pretty sure 4runners have only had Carplay for a couple years.

GM did it with the Camaro, and Ford pulled it off with the Bronco
GM fricked up the Blazer though IMO. Maybe it’s selling well, I don’t know, but it isn’t a Blazer.

I pulled a ‘29 Regulator with one yesterday. Pretty impressive.

It’s a nice family vehicle, but it’s not a Blazer. I wish they’d have named it something else.

And Australia sold about 50k of them in the last year with 1/14th of the population
That would make it the 3rd or second most popular car in the United States at that rate
South Africa its even a bigger divide
You cant drive around either place without every other car being the same as an F-150 here
Just different needs

Problem with 4Runners is, you have to keep them for 15 years.
I would be lucky to get 7 years out of a Toyota truck like that around here. Too much salt on the roads in the winter.
Oddly enough, Toyota’s unit body products seem to do a little better, although they still have terrible rust protection relative to their competitors.

Toyota uses an open source entertainment & navigation software that will work with any phone instead of being limited to Apple and you can update your own software in a few minutes yourself.

I’m in the market at the end of the year to upgrade my Land Rover LR3
I’ve thought about looking at the hybrid EV vehicles in the class. My FIL has the new Range P400E that I had for the weekend after dropping him at the airport and I was extremely impressed. Also they plug into 120v and don’t need 240

I’m not sure what you think real off-roading is, but in the overlanding world, the Land Cruiser is the standard and always has been. The 4Runner is the baby brother just trying to keep up. They’re capable vehicles, but they are not Land Cruisers.
The two vehicles I drag out the most are Jeep and 4Runners.

Almost no one in the United States would ever experience what actual off roading is
Its not a fun activity in reality
Its letting your Toyota Hilux air dry after you dipped it in the river with a stack of supplies that needs to go 200 miles down a rock nonexistant road
I laugh at the off road courses after having done one stretch of a daily trip in the Congo
