They’re capable vehicles, but they are not Land Cruisers.
The latest Land Cruiser in the US market has turned into a bloated, overweight full sized SUV. Toyota clearly aimed the 200 series to the luxury SUV buyer, then didn’t bother keeping it updated.

Toyota uses an open source entertainment & navigation software that will work with any phone instead of being limited to Apple and you can update your own software in a few minutes yourself.
In other words, one of the worlds largest car companies is too cheap to pay the licensing fees for a highly desirable feature that is standard equipment on almost all vehicles in 2020.

They pay for it for almost the entire fleet of vehicles many of which are among the top selling vehicles in the USA
They arent retooling the factory for a very small percentage of sales for one car though
No one in Nigeria cares about entertainment systems

Toyota doesn’t want to sell more LC’s here. In other parts of the world they sell a more Spartan/base one & a great trucklit version. It’s too bad, they could sell the base version here for off/ roading enthusiasts. It’s truly the best overlanding vehicle on the planet.
The major components are designed to last 25 years in a 3rd world country. The Tahara plant that manufactures them is legendary in its own right...plant workers have to take extra dexterity tests in order to have the privilege of assembling LC’s.

Toyota had Cassette players in 2009 lexus
The cassette was killed off around 2001 so they are very conservative company

There arent enough of these exist
And of those that do exist they couldnt even break one if they tried
From what I have seen half the fun of those people is breaking their Jeep down on a designated course and then talking about how hard they went.
Its not a necessarily fun car even in base because you dont get to jack it up and spend 20k on unnecessary swag which is all the United States off road market cares about really.

Sequoia is not half the price, ~$48K+ SR5 and $60k+ for the Platinum, Sequoia is actually bigger than the LC too. Toyota keep their value too, unlike American competitors. The $80,000 (!) Suburban will be lucky to be worth $40,000 in 3 years, especially when GM keeps cranking them out for 72 months at 0% and good luck getting 5 figures for it after 150,000 miles
same drive train. more room.
less money. sequoia is a beast.

Most of the “roads” I travel with mine are just washed out creek beds leading to the river. Some gravel, but it’s not like that’s been maintained and scraped.
Crossing the Tuckasegee and Hiawassee rivers are common occurrences around here.
I think it’s fun

Maybe so. But it’s still a bloated, overweight full size truck with a RTI score of 661 lol. (Hint to non numbers dorks... it’s good. Like realllly good for a stock truck.).

Why get a $90K land cruiser when you can get an $75k Yukon.
If you keep the LC long enough the cost per mile will be lower.

But thats the thing
They really arent supposed to be fun cars
They are straight up necessary cars to get food to people to survive in a lot of places
There isnt anything fun about that. These are people that need to get from place A to place B in a car that will never break in the middle of nowhere.
If I could find a way to get a early 2000s Toyota Hilux here I would abuse the frick out of it for fun though

Can confirm. Rocking the stock cassette player CD combo in my 100 series.

Yeah, I touched on that in my first post. They’re still extremely capable in snow and I’d trust one in places I wouldn’t most other SUV’s, but they are not the off-road luxury vehicle of the past. Which is a shame.
We bought a Volvo two years ago for my wife to drive because the Land Cruiser no longer was the clear winner for “off-road” luxury.

From the article:
[quote]Around the time of the 80 series, considered by some to be the best vehicle Toyota ever made, Toyota began to notice that the people who bought Land Cruisers weren’t rough and tumble types (does that mean they like to roll around in rocks? I don’t know) but were more likely dentists, surgeons, basketball players and so on.
quote:
Ever since then the Land Cruiser J wagon in the US has been on an ever pampering, cosseting trajectory and in 2008 a new model, the J200, was born. Even still, in chasing the money of the well-to-do US buyer by adding luxury the J wagon still retained its authentic roots;
quote:
Toyota, in its infinite wisdom, has decided that Americans only want a fully dressed 200 and so that’s what we get. Its 80 grand+ and although that sounds like a lot of money, as your resident Land Cruiser nuttist, I’m here to try and explain where all that money goes.
It's a great article and really worth your time. It is also concomitantly what made and broke the landcruiser.

I kept the dash in mine as stock as possible. People look at me like I’m crazy when I bust this out for music

Sad. But the new prices are ridiculous especially for an outdated interior and engine.
When I looked inside of a new one, I was like...are they serious with this interior for that price? what a shame for such an awesome vehicle to be taken in this direction, thus prohibiting sales and leading to its demise.

They work though
I was actually surprised at how well they work

Love the 100! I need one
Do it. Prices are starting to get obscene for a 20 year old truck, but if you are patient and willing to travel a bit, you can get a great one. Got mine for a little bit over 8k with @150k miles. All interior bits work and work well, and body in great shape. I changed the timing belt and water pump when I first got it along with all fluids and heater T’s.
I was gonna change out the crank and cam seals but the factory ones still looked mint when it was opened up. With basic maintenance this thing will go another 150k no problem.

I’m in the market at the end of the year to upgrade my Land Rover LR3
I’ve thought about looking at the hybrid EV vehicles in the class. My FIL has the new Range P400E that I had for the weekend after dropping him at the airport and I was extremely impressed. Also they plug into 120v and don’t need 240
I've got no clue. I'm referencing my experience in Europe with diesel engines.
The 2007 Range Rover ran unleaded, however.
I personally wouldn't pay what they ask for these cars here, however (and cars are comparatively cheap here).
I now drive a luxury SUV here, which I wouldn't take off-road anywhere, truth be told.
