He’s talking about an abscess which at this point means the root is gone and inflamed and infected. The puss and infection has nowhere to go so that’s why you see it come out of the gums and sides of tooth.

Have to get the root out either way.

I went to the dentist yesterday with pain in my wisdom tooth and the dentist found a cavity he didn’t fill it he just told me “you’re a 49-year-old man with wisdom teeth these things should’ve came out when you were a kid“. Then he just decided to pull it and that’s what he did.

ahhh. And that sounds awful. Best wishes to the OP. Sorry you’re going through that.

Edit: a tooth ache/problem is honestly one of the worst things to go through. I had a problem one time where everytime I would take a step with my right foot, a sharp pain would go through my body and ache a tooth in my mouth that had a cavity. It was the weirdest thing. It was then when I learned how nerves work through your body.

Depending on which tooth it is some dentists won’t operate on it and might send you to an endodontist.

Some dentists only do two root teeth so if it’s a molar it will have 4 roots

Mine was a left rear upper wisdom. I thought I was just going to get a filling and he tells we were going to pull it I was like “oh shite“. ETA it had three roots and one of them broke off and he just dug that bitch out.

Did y’all know they don’t give pain medicine anymore for that? He just told me to take ibuprofen and Tylenol.

How long ago did you quit dipping? How long did you dip for?

Dipped for about 8 years consistently and weaned myself off over a year. Combine that with heavy drinking and generally not taking care of myself in my early 20s really fricked my mouth up.

Dealt with it once in the past and the dentist wouldn't remove it until I took a full schedule of antibiotics. Hoping it's the same procedure if I have to end up going with a different place.

ETA- not a molar, would be #19 if I'm reading this chart correctly

And yeah they dont even give you Tylenol 3s any more. OTC ibuprofen is about the only pain relief I'll get unless I call up that dumbass brother-in-law of mine

One of my coworkers brought some duck to the office a few months ago. I chomped down on a bb like I was at Cracker Barrel. My affected tooth was sore at first but not unbearable so I didn't worry about it. Three days later I could have told you my pulse without looking. I went to an urgent care to get antibiotics and Hydrocodone to get me through the 2 days before my dentist could see me.

Usually if you have a tooth ace, there's a good chance there is an infection. I didn't have to have a root canal, but did have a small infection starting. It relieves it after about a day taking antibiotics. Just something I've always found helpful.

Yep, two Tylenol’s and two ibuprofens at same time. It will take care of the pain.

Antibiotics for sure! I have one that bothered me awhile back, I was taking my kids left over pink amoxicillin that was in the fridge lol.

So you didn't have your kid finish the antibiotics ad prescribed, and then you take a partial dose.

You have heard of the antibiotic resistance issue, right?

How does this help with teeth/pain?

It's kind of controversial. A lot of docs reflexively give antibiotics (pen VK or amoxicillin) for dental pain, but literature doesn't show benefit unless there are actual signs of infection (fever, abscess, etc.). I don't usually give them unless I drained an abscess, but I see why some would give it for bad tooth pain if they are concerned about a small infection brewing in the pulp.

For dental pain I would stick to ibuprofen/tylenol (400/1000, every 6 hours). Dental putty to cover the broken tooth. Orajel as others have mentioned. And get in to see a dentist ASAP.

You realize they used to give antibiotics for everything right? I think I'll be fine. And they gave my kid extra meds and it was well after he was fine with a follow up. I keep meds man, never know when you'll need something.

I honestly didnt know that the ache was sometimes due to infection.

I feel your agony. I had a root canal years ago and it’s recently started aching again. fricking almost in tears sometimes. Whiskey and IBprofen barely dull it.

I’ve got to bite the bullet and go to the dentist

Piss poor dentist if you can’t get in touch with him/her or some kind of message or answering service after hours. Find someone you can count on to take care of you as a patient. I’m not saying to take advantage of them, but dental emergencies don’t always happen during business hours.
