Conscious sedation. Best $ I every spent. Don’t remember getting there, don’t remember the procedure, don’t remember leaving. A few hours later went to walmart with my husband and don’t remember that either. I picked out some stuff at walmart and the next day I saw it in a bag and thought WTF??? Best $ I every spent.

I had a tooth's nerve die about 2 years ago. The pain was unreal. Nothing, and no combination of drugs, even touched it. In the end, the only thing that helped was gargling with ice water every 30 seconds.

Gonna have to go the doctor route and score some antibiotics.

If your root is flat out abcessed you need more than that. Antibiotics don’t really penetrate into the root/pulp and that’s a good way to get it to spread to the marrow of your jaw and that’s a good way to open yourself to a whole new world of meals via a straw.

You realize they used to give antibiotics for everything right?

Yes and that is why we now have the problem we have today with antibiotic resistance. When you don't finish a complete course of antibiotics...you don't completely kill off the bacteria. You just killed off enough to make you feel better. The rest of the bacteria in you now basically has a cheat sheet for next time you get an infection. And you are now colonized with the resistant bacteria just chilling in your system. Next time you get an actual infection that same antibiotic may not kill that specific bacteria.

But sure...go ahead and keep Brayden's "pink antibiotic...just in case". Be an idiot and not know anything about antibiotic classes and what types of antibiotics kill what types of bacteria. Become part of why one day we will have bacterial infections that will ultimately kill us because not even the strongest antibiotics we have can kill it.

You can find a dentist who will take emergencies. Or go to urgent care and they will hook you up with an antibiotic and Ibuprofen 800mg. Take two antibiotics when you get those filled and take them all until gone. Take the Ibuprofen with 500mgs of Tylenol every four to six hours. That is scientifically proven to be as effective as hydrocodone. If you go to the dentist, have him numb you with some long lasting local so that you can get the scripts filled and get the pain meds in you. If it is severe, he will probably give you 5 or 6 Norcos to get you through the night untill the antibiotics start to take effect. And smokeless tobacco will kill you. Let this be a lesson to you.

Would the ER actually lance a dental abscess or are they going to just send me to a dentist?

They are ER docs...not dentists.

When I had a dental abscess...motrin and warm compresses helped me as well as the obvious pain pills.

I already had an established dentist and was able to call the emergency line and get a couple pain pills prescribed to last me until my appointment(this happened on a Friday evening...my appointment wasn't until Monday afternoon).

When I have patients who can't get in to see me and need some relief from severe pain, I tell them to take 600mg Ibuprofen (3 Advil) + 1000mg acetaminophen (2 extra strength Tylenol.

This combo will do a pretty decent job of taking the edge off.

At best they’ll have a contact to an emergency dentist.

All the ER will do is give you some palliative care and advise you to seek immediate dental care.

And I eep in mind the doomsday scenario I mentioned earlier is the worst case of a periapical abscess. Not all tooth abscesses are the same.

But seriously, one thing is certain: under no circumstances do you want to wait 100+ hours to receive dental care if you have exposed dentin, much less pulp.

(In the former, a quick response might save the tooth from a canal).

If your dentist was aware of your situation and had an attitude of “ill see you first thing Tuesday,” immediately find a new permanent dentist.

Jesus, I hate self assured idiots like you that enable antibiotic resistance.

I hope you get to experience your doctor waiting till your situation is dire enough to warrant the toxicity of third line antibiotics.

Order or buy some “Fish Mox”. It’s amoxicillin and it’s exactly the same stuff you’ll get from the pharmacy.

I keep some in the cabinet just in case.

We have had patients at the hospital I work at with some really extreme drug resistant organisms. Staff having to observe strict isolation precautions and doing intense cleaning to make sure it doesn't spread to other patients on the unit. Having to UV light the room whenever the patient is off to one of the numerous surgeries they have to have for their serious medical condition. Hoping and praying the organism still responds to the strong antibiotics because there is literally nothing else they can give this patient.

I wish people could see that on a regular basis and understand the seriousness of this issue.
