Louisiana's certification process is a joke - especially for teachers in HS

Yet there's still a huge shortage of certified teachers in the state.

Funny how they never include things like free healthcare and retirement in any of these calculations.

...um, no. Teachers pay for health insurance and the cost isn't any lower than any other group policy in any profession. Free retirement? Where do I sign up. Teachers pay into a pension instead of social security. Nearly 10% of my check goes into the "free" retirement pension.

There's so much ignorance and contradiction in this thread that it's astounding. The OT uses any excuse to bash teachers because some individuals know a few teachers who bitch about their jobs, or they see teachers bitching on Facebook.

You misunderstand my point. It's not that it's easy (it is), it is completely unnecessary, especially on the high school level.

The fact that a person with an education degree can teach history in HS without further development but a person with a degree in History has to go through a draconian certification process is preposterous.

I am the latter in your example, and all of the education classes that I took in my "alternate certification" process were a complete waste of time.

Same as me. My Bachelor's Degree gave me the knowledge I need to teach. The Master's in Education was worthless.

When you have parents who give ZERO fricks, the best teacher in the world won't matter.

There's a reason teachers are teaching and not in the real world.

I think he was being a bit facetious there, but SS can't hold a candle to any teacher retirement system. It isn't even close. The financial value of that is completely lost in any of these discussions. Alabama's TRS is worth $10k in wages per year easily if not more to replace SS.

As to the health insurance, It depends on family vs single coverage, but on average single coverage teachers contribute a decently smaller % to health insurance premiums than the private sector does. For family plans, it is more equaled out. Teachers pay more, but their plans are also much more costly. The reason for that are going to be your out of pocket levels. I haven't looked at it in a while, but I'll wager that the out of pocket requirements on the average teacher health insurance plan is pretty significantly less than the average private sector plan.

ETA: My post is not an answer one way or another, but the non-salary financial benefits that teachers do have over the private sector are quite valuable, but are largely ignored in these types of discussions.

If they are so concerned with recovering tax dollars lost due to tax exemptions, then in addition to removing the ITEP, why not also remove the Homestead Exemption. I mean look at all that recoverable revenue that just goes to waste in NBR.

Let me think this through.

Are public schools in EBR succeeding? NO
Will that change if we pay the current teachers more money? NO
Will it change if we hire better teachers? Maybe marginally.
Will we fire bad teachers to hire better teachers? NO
So, will more tax money improve public education in EBR? NO, but we should be used to that.

Until the parents actually give a flying frick, no amount you pay teachers is going to fix baton rouge.
