Together BR, teacher union: Deny all industrial tax exemptions

and commit extra tax funds to teacher raises
We just need more money for teachers who only work 7 months a year!!!!
Funny how they never include things like free healthcare and retirement in any of these calculations.
TBR is nothing more than a socialist political action group that wants your money for political power.

The Louisiana Association of Educators, an ally of Together Baton Rouge, is floating a petition urging the parish’s School Board, when it meets next on May 17, to adopt a resolution removing the parish from Louisiana’s Industrial Tax Exemption Program, or ITEP, and committing to using the extra tax money to fund an employee pay raise. The last across-the-board pay raise was in 2008.

Teacher salaries across the state have been largely flat over the past decade. In some ways, East Baton Rouge Parish looks good. For instance, its average annual teacher salary is about $52,000, ranking 15th of 69 traditional school districts.

East Baton Rouge Parish classroom teachers earn about $34.48 per hour

East Baton Rouge teachers have seen their salaries decline 17 percent in real dollars since 2008. That’s what Together Baton Rouge found when it plugged local salaries into an inflation calculator. To catch up with inflation, these teachers would need to be making another $9,219 a year, the organization concluded.

Damn, now they are down to only 7 months a year....
I am not sure why this board hates teachers so much

I'm not going to lie, I chuckle when I see some of my teacher friends post memes like we are irreplaceable. No, you're not.
Do I think the great, awesome, and truly inventive teachers deserve raises and more money? Yes. The problem that anyone who went through almost any Louisiana school system can tell you is most of the teachers are just not that good or burnt out.

By dropping tax exemption, they will have 0 dollars to disperse because no one will build facilities here.

Teacher's want the laws of supply and demand to not apply to them.
You can't have high salaries, while at the same time have every school in america pumping out teachers. The bar to being a teacher is extremely low.

There is a turnover of nearly 300,000 teachers yearly.
They are one of the easiest professions to replace, especially in the highly structured world of state tests and teaching schedules.

Why don’t we get rid of all business exemptions and then just lower the overall business tax rate? Why do some industries get these goodies and others dont?

I don't hate teachers, per se. I'm just tired of the constant campaigns insisting that we have to pour more money into these school systems as if it's some sort of moral imperative.

bro, no need to bash teachers.
we both know who is really to blame for this short-sight numb-skull suggestion and it has more to do with the race/ethnic background than their occupation.

I think removing tax exemptions might Chase away your industries and impact future earnings and be detrimental....
But..
When my wife taught her money was only paid for the months of the year so she worked. You could chose to have checks only for this months or spread throughout the year and each check was reduced accordingly.
Healthcare and retirement were definitely NOT free.
Lol. No. You're an idiot

I don't hate teachers, I just have the same beef with teachers that I do with the police. Rather than dealing with the crappy people in their profession, they band together and demand across the board wages.

$52,000/year teachers can't improve the performance of the schools? It's almost like the kids themselves (and by proxy, their parents) that actually determine whether or not a school is good.

Also, it is asinine that teaching requirements aren’t held to a much higher standard.
Teachers should be some of the best educated in our society and the requirements should be daunting.
Make the profession more selective and you’ll see pay increase.

This line of reasoning is racist, bruh

who only work 7 months a year!!!!
They get 2 months off for the summer, June & July (they start preparing for the coming school year with mandatory meetings and classroom preparation the first week in August) and 4.2 weeks off for holidays during the school year.
Posted on 5/9/18 at 9:52 am to upgrayedd
They don't get five months off and there is a lot of out of pocket expenses.

This is the problem and no amount of money will change this.

Ok, I might've made it a bit more salacious than it needed to be

You need to pay them first before you are going to attract them. Its kind of hard to be selective when you offer is 30-40k. Teaching already has many detractors, salary makes it even worse. Sure they get some bank holidays a week off for Christmas and Easter, then two months in the summer, but they also work 10hr plus days throughout the regular year.
FTR, I am not a teach, nor married to one. But I do know a few
