Today’s Useless Information: People wander counterclockwise when lost or free roaming.

Recent research shows humans have an innate, global bias to drift to the left and walk in a counterclockwise (anticlockwise) direction when wandering aimlessly or when lost. Even though scientists don't yet have a definitive cause, studies from researchers in Spain and Japan found this counterclockwise tendency occurs across nearly all ages, cultures, and conditions.
Scientists conducted dozens of free-roaming, enclosed-space, and crowd experiments to isolate variables, but they are still somewhat stumped by the exact cause. Some prevailing theories include:
1. Leg Dominance
2. Brain Asymmetry

Yeah, cancer is still out there. Why in the frick are we studying which direction people fricking walk?
Trust the science!

Is it tue same in the Southern Hemisphere, or is this like toilets?

OP listened to JRE with Taylor Sheridan recently. Regardless its fascinating.

Can confirm. Through decades of wandering around in the woods, I can confirm that I have a naturally tendency to drift left, and it requires conscious effort to maintain a constant heading or to God forbid, attempt to have a right hook in the heading. Wandering without any effort to maintain a specific course results in a gradual left turn.

Yeah I think it's because most people are right handed, and if you're walking to the left you have better leverage with your right arm and right leg.
Think about a punch. Your body rotates counterclockwise.

What about people who live in the Southern Hemisphere?

I wonder if it has anything to do with Earth's magnetic field. See dogs:
quote:
A 2013 study found that dogs tended to align their bodies along the north–south axis when peeing or pooping, but mainly under calm geomagnetic conditions. The effect disappeared when Earth’s magnetic field was unstable. The researchers tracked 70 dogs, across 37 breeds, recording 1,893 defecations and 5,582 urinations over two years.
So the “dogs poop facing north” claim is a simplified version. More accurately: dogs may prefer a north–south body alignment when relieving themselves, but only under certain magnetic-field conditions, and it does not mean every dog always faces the same direction. PBS also summarized the study as dogs avoiding east–west alignment under calm magnetic conditions.

I’m guessing it’s because in those situations we want to be prepared to act fast in self-defense. Most people are right handed, so when taking a left turn your right arm is in a position of strength.

I’m pretty sure I learned this in the Boy Scouts about 45 years ago. I can’t recall the instruction exactly but, when lost and walking a straight line, make a slight adjustment to the right every however many steps.

Is it due to how the Earth spins? I feel like a natural reaction to something moving underfoot is to walk in the opposite direction.
Also learned last night on this site that if you just keep making left turns you'll eventually make it out of any enclosed maze regardless of the complexity.
All i got this morning.
