The overlords knew just how long to keep the oppression going and when to let up.

I said he was a nut because he believed he was God’s vessel to perpetrate revenge. Things that happened (or didn’t happen, like when nobody bid on the tractor during his sale) were perceived by him as the hand of God pushing him to do what he did. I’m sorry, that’s not obsession, that’s straight up crazy.

Good points here.

Heemeyer repeatedly invokes God as his driving force. It's lunacy and justification in his own mind. This happens multiple times if you listen to the tapes all the way through.

He also made a big deal that people saw his bulldozer partially covered during construction and it was some kind of miracle nobody suspected anything. He made up a cover story about developing some kind of experimental engine accessory that he was going to test out.

The thing is under a tarp and you make up a plausible story so people accept it and move on. Doesn't sound like the hand of God at work to me.

When people are crazy, everything that happens is a sign telling them they are on the right track.

I'll stand by my claim that he descended into madness.

I must admit it is a fascinating tale and I've spent hours researching it.

Best factual information and history of Heemeyer and his early life and life pre-Granby is in the book "Malice".

Unfortunately the second half of the book is a speculative fiction (kind of like OJ's "If I Did It"). But the first half is legit.

"Killdozer" was penned by Robert Brower (paper guy who was in one of the buildings as it was about to be bulldozed) and certainly lacks some objectivity in my opinion.

Again, I can't praise "Tread" enough. Very factual and like most great documentaries lets you see both sides of the story and leaves the viewer questioning when it is done.

And think about it...he had to do this in order to give us the story.

Because if he just builds the Killdozer and never actually Dozes anything with it...who cares?

Thankfully that is true. But it was not for lack of trying on his part though. That's my point. He literally tried to shoot several innocent cops, tried to blow up tanks that would have hurt innocent people, and destroyed buildings where innocent citizens were (that they had been evacuated just prior to him showing up was unbeknownst to him).

He may not be a hero, but he was enraged by government ****ry and no one got hurt, so he gets the benefit of the doubt in my book. I wish there were always consequences for abuse of government power. We wouldn’t be in the hole we’re in now if every overreach was met with a few govt buildings and politicians’ personal property turned to rubble.

Upvoted.

There are no consequences whatsoever for the appalling way people in government conduct themselves. In fact, it’s damn near an award system for the most corrupt and incompetent.

At the same time this was happening, the then Sec of Defense was sending troops down range with unarmored Humvees and other military vehicles

The people celebrating this guy is ridiculous. He was completely delusional in all his invoking God stuff as part of the reason. Also, for people acting like he “got back” at them or “made his point”, well he ended up with a bullet in his head, so doesn’t really seem like a W to me.

You people miss the forest for the trees.

It’s an awesome story and a testament to what happens when a single man has the WILL to do something, and the skill.

People keep saying the government screwed him, but he sold his building for $400,000 after buying it for $42,000. When he sold it he leased it out, and the documentary said that the new owner had the sewage connected immediately. The documentary actually said “within a day”. Which may be BS.

But I’m trying to figure out how he really got screwed here?

He was a screw ball that went nuts, that’s really about it.

There's a documentary about this on Netflix or somewhere. Watched it over the winter. Pretty interesting.
