A man that became fed up with local politics and BS took matters into his own hands

quote:

Heemeyer had feuded with Granby town officials, particularly over fines for violating city health ordinances after local officials made it financially impossible for Heemeyer to connect to the city sewage system. He was subsequently fined for improperly dumping sewage from his business instead of connecting to the city sewer system. His feud came to a head[colloquialism] on June 4, 2004. Over about eighteen months Heemeyer had secretly modified a Komatsu D355A bulldozer by adding layers of steel and concrete, intended to serve as armor.[1] He used this to demolish the Granby town hall, the former mayor's house, and several other buildings. Heemeyer's rampage concluded with his suicide, after his bulldozer became trapped in the basement of a hardware store he had been in the process of destroying.

quote:

The attack lasted for two hours and seven minutes, damaging thirteen buildings,[7] knocking out natural gas service to the town hall and the concrete plant, damaging a truck, and destroying part of a utility service center.[9] Despite the great damage to property, no one besides Heemeyer (by a self-inflicted gunshot wound) was killed in the event.[1] However, the modified bulldozer came to be known as "Killdozer" after the name of a short story by Theodore Sturgeon.[10] The damage was estimated at $7 million.[11][12] According to Grand County commissioner James Newberry, emergency dispatchers used the reverse 911 emergency system to notify many residents and property owners of the rampage going on in the town.

Happy Killdozer Day!

The Ballad of Killdozer

Well Marvin was a welder, just a humble working man,
In Granby, Colorado, where he’d make his final stand,
So now I’ll tell his tale so heed the lesson that he brings
“Sometimes reasonable men must do unreasonable things”

Killdozer! Killdo-o-ozer!
You know sometimes a man he just refuses to surrender
Killdozer! Killdo-o-ozer!
when you mess with such a man he’ll give you something to remember

He owned a couple acres and a shop to make repairs,
Not a man to wrong another without cause,’
But some bureaucrats decided that he wasn’t good enough,
And so they destroyed his livelihood with laws,

They had finished Marvin’s business,
Left him no way in or out,
By the red tape one more common man screwed over,
But inside Heemeyer spied unfinished business of his own,
When with vengeance on his mind he eyed his Dozer

Killdozer! Killdo-o-ozer!
You know sometimes a man he just refuses to surrender
Killdozer! Killdo-o-ozer!
when you mess with such a man he’ll give you something to remember

For 18 months he built it,
Cement sandwiched within steel,
A cocoon of revenge filled with screens and guns,
With an armor plated engine,
This behemoth with a blade,
When complete it weighed in over 60 tons

On fourth of June he climbed into his tomb,
And sealed it shut,
Greased the sides so none could climb this beast of metal,
There was no door, created for it,
He just smashed right through the walls,
His legend roared as to the floor he pushed the pedal,

Killdozer! Killdo-o-ozer!
You know sometimes a man he just refuses to surrender
Killdozer! Killdo-o-ozer!
when you mess with such a man he’ll give you something to remember

The plant that caused it all, was first to fall, and the the town hall,
Then the dens of all the men who’d done him wrong,
When the cops, they tried to stop it,
bombs and guns could not prevail,
They all failed for the Killdozer was too strong,

Bridge:
Then to challenge him in the road,
On a metal beast of his own,
Sat the man who had used the machine of state,
To take Heemeyer’s Land,
But Now Killdozer Stands,
Two Treads Driven By Fate

Banjos and fiddles duel

And though some may call him crazy,
Sometimes every normal man,
Feels the urge to hoist the black flag,
And put spit upon his hands,p
In his defense,
No innocents,
Were harmed in his destruction,
He met his end,
Buried within,
A tomb of his construction,

So if you’re feeling small,
Then just recall, And give some thanks,
When they step upon the little man,
Somewhere killdozer cranks!,

Killdozer! Killdo-o-ozer!
You know sometimes a man he just refuses to surrender,
Killdozer! Killdo-o-o-ozer!
When you mess with such a man he’ll give you something to remember

“Sometimes reasonable men must do unreasonable things”

The documentary on Netflix named Tread is a good watch. Dude was off his rocker obviously but the town and zoning commission pulled some BS moves to try to force him to sell his shop all because of dirty politics.

Quite the contrary.

He went specifically out of his way to not kill anyone. He just wanted to destroy as MUCH property as possible of those specific people who destroyed his livelihood.

Honestly I would have done the same.

I was gonna say, the NF doc is decent.

He's hailed as a hero by far too many people IMO, because he's clearly fricking insane and is a complete a-hole for what he did...and he put innocent people in danger. But there's no question the small-town dirty politics is definitely to blame as well.

He was very bright, and I agree he went out of his way to not harm anyone, but the letters and audio tapes scream of a man with some mental issues. He thought God gave him this as his calling.

I try not to get bogged down in the whole “right or wrong” thing on this one because it’s just such a damn good story.

It’s more of a folk legend for me. Like a John Henry or Big Bad John

He is hailed as a hero for doing what many people that feel marginalized have wanted to do and he did it without causing physical harm to anyone. Had he killed anyone, then he wouldn't be seen in the light many see him in.

I agree. But he was still shooting at cops and propane tanks out of his "gun holes" in his tank. Just because he happened to not kill anyone doesn't mean he wasn't trying to.

ETA (from Wiki):
quote:

Defenders of Heemeyer's contended that he made a point of not hurting anybody during his bulldozer rampage;[1] Ian Daugherty, a bakery owner, said Heemeyer "went out of his way" not to harm anyone. Others offered different views. The sheriff's department argued the fact that no one was injured was not due to good intent as much as to good luck. Heemeyer had installed two rifles in firing ports on the inside of the bulldozer,[14] and fired fifteen bullets from his rifle at power transformers and propane tanks. "Had these tanks ruptured and exploded, anyone within one-half mile (800 m) of the explosion could have been endangered", the sheriff's department said. Twelve police officers and residents of a senior citizens complex were within such a range.[5] Heemeyer fired many bullets from his semi-automatic rifle at Cody Docheff when Docheff tried to stop the assault on his concrete plant by using a wheel tractor-scraper, which was pushed aside by Heemeyer's bulldozer. Later, Heemeyer fired on two state patrol officers before they had fired at him.[5] The sheriff's department also noted that eleven of the thirteen buildings Heemeyer bulldozed were occupied until moments before their destruction. At the town library, for example, a children's program was in progress when the incident began.

He definitely did not "attempt to not hurt anyone." That is literally 100% bullshite.

Yup. You can nitpick on the details of “oh he was crazy” or “people could have gotten hurt”.

Or you can just enjoy a wild, real story with the following facts.

He built a goddamn armored bulldozer, by himself, And it worked

He targeted only the people that had wronged him.

No one (besides himself) was hurt.

The gov’t thought about shooting a missile to stop him before the rampage ended on its own.

Like him or not, that shite is legendary.

The propane tanks were far enough away that he wasn't going to kill anyone IIRC. The shooting at cops I see as more of a deterrent. I am willing to bet, as smart as he seemed to be, if he had really wanted to kill a cop then he could have. He had the tactical advantage to take his time and line up his shots.

This is entirely wrong.

Thankfully that is true. But it was not for lack of trying on his part though. That's my point. He literally tried to shoot several innocent cops, tried to blow up tanks that would have hurt innocent people, and destroyed buildings where innocent citizens were (that they had been evacuated just prior to him showing up was unbeknownst to him).
