There once was a hippo living in Cross Lake in Shreveport.

quote:

Cross Lake hippo, a historically-documented, “strange but true” tale that dates back to the mid-1920s, not the late 1960s. According to the fantastic book, Shreveport, by the late historian Eric Brock, a hermit living on Cross Lake purchased a baby hippopotamus and raised it in a secluded cove. The hermit’s plan was to raise the hippo, which he’d purchased for $25, and sell it to a zoo for a profit.

A fisherman named Jake Carnahan nearly spoiled that plan when, while fishing in June 1928, he spotted “a huge beast, blowing water from its nostrils.” Word quickly spread, and the “beast” was hunted and captured. If you’d like to know how the saga of the Cross Lake hippo ends, you’ll just have to buy the book. Let’s just say that the hippo ends up being sold to a well-known zoo, netting a tidy profit for the hermit and causing anglers on Cross Lake to breathe a collective sigh of relief.

Isn't this how we got nutrias? I think they were imported to eat the water hyacinths. Hippos would be more fun.

I think they were imported by the Mcilhenny family to raise to sell for their furs, but a hurricane that hit Avery Island allowed them to escape. Back then, furs trapping in South Louisiana was extremely profitable, and fur was in demand nation wide. Nutria fur was discovered to be waterproof, so the Mcilhenny's had the bright idea of importing them from South America, raising them in captivity, and then selling them. Turned out the name "nutria rat" wasn't that appetizing to consumers despite the quality of the fur, so the plan was a complete disaster.

maybe these days, but I bet It would have been much more difficult 100 years ago.

Why would it be difficult 100yrs ago? Unregulated hunting decimated the bison population and eradicated the Jaguar in the United States.

The last reported Jaguar killed in Louisiana was in 1886.

quote:

The last reported sighting of a jaguar in Louisiana was in June 1886, when the Donaldsonville Chief newspaper reported that two men had killed a 200-pound animal that had killed several colts, cattle and dogs. The big cat was "said to have resembled the jaguar or American tiger, more than the panther."

Just my opinion, but I think reintroducing the Jaguar to Louisiana might beneficial in culling the wild hog population.

Surprised that pythons have not flourished as they have in Everglades. That’s good.

Glad to see someone else posted to Longform "American Hippopotamus". It's one of the best articles I've ever read.

Not necessarily. Pablo Escobar had 5 hippos in his estate in South America. They’ve taken over the entire area now and the herd has grown to over 60. And they’re creating massive problems

Politicians are so shortsighted. They try to solve a problem, but create three more in the process.

The Jaguar is by far the most feared animal in the Amazon. You think reintroducing the Jaguar back to LA would be a good idea?
