From Wiki

quote:

In the U.S., Representative Robert F. Broussard of Louisiana introduced the "American Hippo bill" in 1910 to authorize the importation and release of hippopotamus into the bayous of Louisiana.[81][82] Broussard argued that the hippopotamus would eat the invasive water hyacinth that was clogging the rivers and also produce meat to help solve the American meat crisis.[82][83] The chief collaborators and proponents of Broussard's bill were Major Frederick Russell Burnham and Captain Fritz Duquesne[84][85] Former President Theodore Roosevelt backed the plan, as did the U.S. Department of Agriculture, The Washington Post, and The New York Times which praised the taste of hippopotamus as "lake cow bacon".[84] The "American Hippo Bill" fell just short of being passed.[82]

Could you imagine life on the waters with a potential threat of Hippos lurking? It’s bad enough with gators. Hippos kill Crocodiles easily in subSaharan Africa. Hippos could easily charge your boat and topple everyone over to their deaths.

That would have been an absolute disaster.

I'm surprised Louisiana didn't find a way to make it happen.

Louisiana releases hippos on the beaches of Alabama and Florida every summer.

How was there a meat crisis? Maybe during Dust Bowl/Depression era, but that was a generation later.

I wonder if they also consider releasing water buffalos back then?

Hippos, buffs, crocs, and gators would have made for a hell of a bayou experience.

Here's an interesting article that Wiki article uses as a source that explains the people and reasoning behind the idea.

American Hippopotamus

If you take disease vector insects off of the table, hippos are one of the top three killers of humans on the planet.

Why? I think I'd been cool. Not like they'd be a difficult to extinguish invasive species. Such large animals with low birthing rates could be quickly controlled.

From the article I linked.

quote:

America was withering under a serious meat shortage at the time. Beef prices had soared as rangeland had been ruined by overgrazing, and a crippled industry struggled to satisfy America’s explosively growing cities, an unceasing wave of immigrants, and a surging demand for meat abroad
