The pressure at a depth of 2.5 miles is about 400 atmospheres, 400 times the pressure on the surface and equivalent to half a tonne per square centimeter.
At sea level, atmospheric pressure is 14.7 psi on the body.
(400 x 14.7) = 5,880 psi on that sub. Almost 3 tons per square inch.
With all that being said, how tf does any organism exist down there, and wtf are they made of.

The ocean is huge.
Well, he did ask to explain it like he’s 5 LOL.
My question in a similar vein, is that is it possible to equip the vessel with a black box like pinging mechanism? I believe those are functional in extremely deep water??

curious whether they were insured by Lloyds?

Given the prevalent flaws in the previously tested 1/3 scale model, and the visible flaws in the carbon end samples for the Titan, Lochridge again stressed the potential danger to passengers of the Titan as the submersible reached extreme depths. The constant pressure cycling weakens existing flaws resulting in large tears of the carbon
So it was basically a matter of time, yikes.

Good question. Would Lloyd’s insure something that doesn’t have any certifications like the sub?

Watched a video of the team and them assembling this vessel. First red flag was the CEO said “I didn’t want to hire a bunch of 50 year old white men because that wouldn’t inspire the next generation. What we are doing is revolutionary and we want the younger generation involved”.
So basically the hires made were to check a box, be hip and cool and nothing to do with experience or expertise in he field.
$250,000. That’s what that much money gets you.

Interesting thing is that Hamish Hamlin the billionaire aeronautics guy on the sub is experienced in this deep underwater stuff:
“On 5 March 2021, Harding and Victor Vescovo dived to the deepest point of the Mariana Trench, the Challenger Deep at a depth of 36,000 feet (11,000 m), in a two-person submarine, setting the records for greatest length covered and greatest time spent at full ocean depth.“
