Its happening in Japan as we speak, and to a degree in western Europe.

Same factors in all places (people aren't having children, cultural dilution/erasure, religious decline, etc.)

I'm not a Mayberry person - I realize decline is relative and there are objective areas of progress. But there are some increasingly obvious signs of regression, too.

The people that we need to have children are the ones most economically disadvantaged from doing so.

How backwards is that?

Agreed. But at some point cultures are going to evolve. Pick up some good things leave some good things behind. It certainly isnt linear.

Is that "progress"? depends on where you sit.

I figure the children is economics as anything else. Two parents having to work makes childcare a mfer, especially in those early years. It certainly doesnt help the loneliness situation.

I dont have the same sour view on the culture as many here do.

Now religious decline ties pretty directly to the problem I think. We've lost so much of that sense of community. While not religious, I see the benefit in something that makes people meditate and also come together once a week.

It doesnt need to be religion to get communities together, but its a good vehicle.

We need more block parties.

This really isn’t something new. People that far exceed the average lifespan eventually get to the point where almost all of the people they grew up with are gone. When you look around and all of your siblings, friends and contemporaries are gone, that’s always going to be depressing. Add on top of that we don’t let them do drugs and get hammered.

I thought this might be about a much younger demographic based on subject title. I agree 80+ should be allowed to go out on their own terms in a more humane way that shooting/hanging themselves.

I also would guess many more mid-life people are becoming ‘tired with life’ than past generations.

It's barbaric that we don't allow people to go out on their own terms.

Maybe leave the existential debates to other people, champ.

Already told my wife/kids, if i have have to go a NH, don't know who they are, etc., to give me a big handful of pill, smoother me with a pillow or a shot of insulin between he toes, etc. No desire to waste away in a NH or tied to machines.

Mu FIL is failing. He had early onset dementia and now has a permanent catheter, which he can't leave alone, and constantly causes to leak.

He's about to go into a nursing home, which if he live more than 3 years will eliminate his life savings, which he has been scrimpimg on spending for a decade to leave something for his kids.

He is miserable living like this.

It’s anomie. The disruption of faith and culture has taken away guiding forces in society. And for what?

More like

Person A: “I am in daily physical and emotional pain, lost everyone I have ever loved, have lived my life to the fullest, and would like to go now.”

Person B: “No. Sorry. You must continue to suffer until the same result occurs on its own.”

can you imagine the massive balls of anyone going down that road? thats so much conviction for something you believe in. It's hard to imagine having any more respect for a person. I only wish I was that strong

I wonder how these folks compare to their contemporaries who are religious.
