That's less asinine than the iPad that asks if I wanna leave a 25% tip for the person who filled a plastic cup w ice then poured cold brew over the ice

Another thing is people tip 20% of the grand total which includes taxes vs the subtotal. So if the bill comes out 100 + 10(tax) =110, why do the waiter/waitress obligated to get 20% of the sales tax?

I thought 15% was the standard. I'm behind the times apparently.

I always have heard 18% was the standard but who really knows. Seems like tipping propaganda is pushing 20% as the standard now though

I'll give you 20-25%. If you are a hot piece, then 30%.
frick that. Hot chicks get enough breaks in life. I'm not giving them more of my hard earned money for simply existing. I tip solely based on performance.

If you also want to get annoyed, a lot of places calculate it based on ending amount including tax

We eat out every meal. Those suggestions piss me off. A lot of times I just click the least amount out of spite.

I normally tip 25% if service is decent. We have a normal waiter on Wednesday and Thursday nights and also on Sunday Brunch were we give them $100 each serving sometimes more depending on the tab.

For decent service 15% should be enough and it’s funny that they don’t include that.

I worked in a few restaurants in college. I recall 15% being the expected norm for good service. Then over the years it bumps up to 18%, then 20% as being standard. I just don't get the justification. Prices are higher now, so your 15% is higher.

A nicer establishment with backup waiters and such....sure. You are getting a higher level of service. A coffee shop where you put the drink on a counter...nope.

That was the suggested tip at the coffee shop the other day. I did custom tip for 10%. It was not table service, I ordered two coffees and a muffin at the counter and picked them up at the other end of the counter.

Why even tip? It’s basically no different than a fast food restaurant and people don’t tip there.

It’s been 20% for a while now.

According to who? And what’s the justification for that?

We’re not talking about the real problem here. The restaurant industry has tricked you into thinking you should pay their employees. And the servers are fine with that because they end up making far more under this tipping scam than any sensible wage would pay.
The sole purpose of the restaurant is to sell me a meal. But they won’t bring it to me. And I can’t go get it. I have to pay someone they have designated as my “server“ to go get it for me. And here’s the best part, It’s a sliding scale based on the cost of the meal. The same skill and effort that delivers a hamburger delivers a steak, but I am expected to pay many times more for that one trip from the kitchen with a steak.
It is a racket and the older I get the less inclined. I am to go along with it.

Then go eat at McAllister's and Mr. Gatti's. You're not forced to go to these places

My biggest problem is alcohol.

Most place a good beer is gonna be 7-8-9 bucks and a cocktail the same .

If you’re with a person or 2 or 3 you can get couple per person you can have 100 bucks for just drinks.
I tip 1$ on drinks.
That’s me.

Tax X 2 is my formula if they do a spectacular job and actually serve not me picking up food at a counter.

You’re missing the point again. These restaurants want customers. They will go out of business without patrons. Then no one is better off.
And I’m most frustrated by the spread of tipping to new areas where the “service” is minimal and, again, what the business consists of. You sell me a cup of coffee. If you, the shop, won’t hand it to me, where are we? So should I give your employee an extra buck to get my coffee? Because I know the employer doesn’t, it’s now my problem?
Please believe me, I am a generous tipper and have been for decades but I’m slowly catching on that we’re being played. That’s all.

I don’t even do that much for a counter service. I do the “custom” and depending on how customer friendly they are I may do $1-2 at the most. This shite has gotten out of control.

We are being played. Every business owner under the sun is making the excuse to rob us. It’s time to close the wallet, recession or not. I don’t tip either unless sit down service. And it’s 20% bf tax, if exemplary service. More if a small bill. I no longer care about subsidizing servers. It’s a tip of thank you. The stuff I read and how they talk about patrons is sickening and entitlement. I just press “no tip” and move along with my day for everything else.
