Unless the service was horrible (and sometimes it is, but even then I only throttle back to 15%), I usually tip 20%, rounded up to the next $5 interval.

Long before I became professionally successful, I was poor and worked a good number of crap delivery jobs around my school schedule. I remember how much an extra tip meant back in the day.

I feel like as a general rule everyone should work in a restaurant at some point in their life. It isn't always easy, and it will teach compassion to give people a little grace.

For decent service 15% should be enough and it’s funny that they don’t include that.

Then do the math in your head. It's not really that hard.

As for me, if the service is good, then I have no qualms about 20%.

Agreed. Being on the receiving end of people's demands makes for a more humble human.

I tip but never understand this logic. Everyone blames the customer but not the employer who pays low wages or employee who chose the low paying job.

The tip amount is actually higher than those they show, since tipping is properly calculated on the PRE TAX amount.

IMHO the tip being calculated after tax is a bigger turnoff than the predetermined rates.

This happens everywhere and it is quite dishonest on behalf of the restaurant.

I agree. That kind of hustling for food, rent & gas will really open your eyes to the difficulties a great many face.

I'm as jaded and cynical now as the next guy, but helping people who are trying to help themselves should be a core value.

Sometimes I'll throw an extra $20 to my Dasher and you can see in their expression you just made their day.

I remember when 20% was the above and beyond amount and almost warranted telling a manager how much of a gem the waiter was. Now it’s the minimum for a spaced out teenager who’s rude to you.

Tipping culture is getting to the point where customers are wholesale beginning to rebel against it.

Almost like tipping has jumped the shark.

When I get exceptional service, in the infrequent times we eat out, I give a generous tip. it's always 20%, including tax, but if the server is great, I will leave $100. We can't take it with us.

As a former server, there should be some hustle, an attempt to be gracious, kind and willing to do your job. I worked at The Chimes, off campus and it was turn and burn. No matter the table, I tried to make the experience pleasant. Not all people can be made happy, but I did my best.

I do base 20% then I request 1-2 unusual things and see how they handle it and if they handle well, I add up to 5% for each request.

Good Personality is good for additional 5%

Do something unexpected and get another 5%

Prices have gotten so high. Today a quick lunch at a Mexican place was 106 bucks for us four. Nothing extravagant four 16-20 dollar entrees a quacamole. Kids had a root beer each water for me and tea for the wife.

It is hard to wanna tip 18-20 bucks for a lunch in a crowded Mexican place where the waiter came by 3 times.

That meal was 60 bucks not long ago with a 10-12 buck tip

Worked in that business forever. Adding a 30% suggested grat is beyond fricking stupid.
