A new tipping practice is sparking outrage among hotel guests.

Some Marriott and Hyatt properties have started asking for tips at the front desk during check-in - a move many find off-putting.

Traditionally, hotel guests might tip for services like luggage assistance or leave cash for housekeeping.

Hotel chains have argued that prompting their guests to tip is an effective way to boost staff pay without having to raise wages.

According to travel expert Gary Leff tipping at the front desk is only typical in Las Vegas, because it is an understood custom for requesting a room upgrade.

That’s a no for me. I’m a great valet and bellhop tipper. You know, people that actually do something to help me. And an extra 20 to valet will get your shite much quicker

The best thing to avoid the tipping scam is to book online, check in online, get a digital room key on your phone, and you never have to interact with the hotel staff. Now if you want freebies then I guess you have to ask, but I was grateful for the experience and free stay.

When I went to Vegas in 2023, that was how I booked at an MGM property. The only time I had to interact with someone was when I got my free play for the trip activated at the cage and to get paid for a handpay jackpot I won.

I don't draw a lot of lines with tipping, but this would be one.

I’ve never tipped for an upgrade but that’s about the only thing I’d consider tipping for just to check in.

At the hotels, I leave the tipping for the maids. That really has to be the worst job in the world.

ok, so true road warriors know that tipping the front desk folks will get you a bad arse upgrade. its a bit of a gamble, but I have had multiple instances where I got corner suites and damn near presidential suite type upgrades by slipping the front desk agent a $100.

This is only worth it at fancy hotels, of course, and you kinda have to linger a bit before picking the grizzled veteran type desk agent to help ensure a successful attempt.

I would never do this as a routine at a fricking Home 2 in Bawcomville though. This shite is getting out of control.

I'll tip receptionist up to $20 if they upgrade me to a jr suite or something but only then.

I'm titanium marriott and hhonors diamond but I usually stay at courtyards and hamptons or alofts where upgrades aren't much of a thing anyhow.

It was out of control a decade ago. It’s reached the point of satirical hilarity.

Why would I tip the front desk when I have the best suite available?
