I'm more sympathetic to the ones doing car washes, etc. for money. I don't have time if little Jaxxxon is just asking for money. Now, if Jaxxxon's mom has a nice set of jugs and is willing to show em.....

This shite pisses me off.
I refuse to donate to anything like this unless there is a service/product provided. My own child doesn’t just receive money without working for it.

The best (most profitable) money raising schemes I see now are gun raffles.
A $20 ticket gets you a chance to win one of several guns. Guys at work eat that shite up.
this is what we do.
either 3 or 5 guns. we dont have to deal with the guns, just have to pay for it at the designated shop. winners go in and have background run at the shop and pick up.
we go live on facebook for the drawing so its no funny business.

Have seen multiple pleas for assistance today for kids sports seasons. Football squares, raffles, etc.
Where do you stand?
I support them when I can. Our local teams have the most expensive travel budgets of any school in the country, since they have to fly to away games. I support them.

Both my boys play school football 7th and 12th grade. They now want us to sell discount cards to crap knowone wants or $ 500 a piece. That’s a $1000 dollars to play school sports. How about quit giving them backpacks, hoodies, caps, and endless supplies of sport shirts. My kids don’t need all that crap every year!
that is not that much.
the High Schools near us usually do auctions and are able to raise a couple hundred grand for sports
Barbe baseball raises about 500k per year through the auction, selling advertising at the field and donations
i know the Barbe bluebells dance team raises a ton through a local talent show where they sell tables, alcohol, auction etc. Raise a couple hundred grand off that yearly.
We go to a bunch of auctions for the schools and $1000 isnt anything compared to what the local business owners are donating so go tell them thank you when you can. I promise those are the people that are allowing your kid to play...not your $1,000 donation.

In the end, I will give money to the organizations that are truly open to everyone. There are a lot of driven, athletic kids out there who can’t afford private school or select ball. I hate the idea of a kid getting priced out of sports. Athletics should be open to everyone with the ability to compet
then dont bitch about travel teams fundraising. that is how most of the poor are able to afford to be able to play. sure they could go play Little league but they would be left behind and by 7th grade....prolly out the game at that point.

That I support, selling candy, raffle tickets, have done a car wash.
Is there really that much difference though
Only the principle learned and the morality of it all.
But seeing as principle and morality are slipping further and further away each day, I concede to your point.
There is no difference at all between teaching a child the reciprocation of work for payment vs just that same child standing on a street corner and just asking for a handout for a decision that THEY made.
Nope, no difference at all.

They have to fundraise to go to tournaments etc. School doesn’t have the budget to cover everything.
I don't have the funds to cover the 2 ski trips and 3 beach trips I want to make every year. Can you let me in on the list of donors that I can contact to pay for my shite?

Hard part of this is probably 70% of the group agrees with you. They just want to pay their way. But the other 30% simply can’t afford it. So as a team they fund raise and yes it decreases the cost of everyone but allows those that absolutely can’t afford it to play. That’s been my experience. When asked I’ll always just pay my way but if asked to support the group and help fundraise I’ll participate for the good of the group. I’ve also just paid the way for another kid. But it’s generally more than one kid so it get tough.

We let fundraisers keep the money for the select soccer…if they ‘shook cans’ out front of a store then whoever did it split that money. Just be cool. My son isn’t doing that…but more power to you if you want your son to help with the cost.
The better your kids are at the endeavor the more expensive it gets. It’s best to let their skill dictate the cost…just paying a bunch isn’t going to make him better.
When they start competing nationally and winning you’re big time fricked. Just turn them into spendy vacations and enjoy yourself.

I’ll buy worlds finest chocolate even though it’s not with it anymore or let them wash my car. Absolutely not to street corner or Fb post contribution begging. Something in exchange.
Posted on 9/6/24 at 12:42 pm to TackySweater
The gofund mes and begging on facebook is pathetic.
Wash some cars, have a barbeque fundraiser or shut the frick up.

I never made my kid do this, just gave them some money instead

If teams are having a bake sale to raise money, I'll buy some cookies or brownies.

I don’t think sports are as important as most folks but if I got a co-worker doing a gun raffle I buy one. If I lose I hold it over their head so it’s fun.

Didn’t bitch about it. Just said I’m more likely to give my money to rec leagues.

An alternate reality would be one where all but the most talented kids stayed in Little League. That’s what happened 30 years ago, and you didn’t have to do any fundraising for the poor kids in select. I know it’s possible because it used to exist. In my opinion, youth sports were so much better before all of this select/club shite took over. Just one more thing better about the 90s.

If it is for school or local rec ball, I will usually buy/donate.
If it is for any sort of travel ball, I will not even consider it. Pay for your own shite. And I coach travel ball

I feel the same way, and my kids do Little League and select. I’ll generously give my time and money to Little League, and I don’t mind fundraising for LL. I can’t ever see myself asking for donations for my kids’ select teams. One is a community-based organization that’s open to everyone. Little League frequently waives fees for families unable to pay regardless of player talent level. Select is pay to play. Not the same thing.

It’s ridiculous…from elementary school on. Classrooms are full of the latest technology, smart boards, kids get laptops, etc. but we have biannual fundraisers so teachers can have paper and crayons for the e-school kids or so the ones playing sports can have uniforms.
My son’s football team gave us a choice of doing the email begging routine or just cut a check. We cut a check.

My oldest is in travel softball, so far all fund raisers have had something in return. If it benefits the entire team I will actually attempt to sell something. If it just benefits my child directly, pass. We will pay her own way.
I do understand there are some very talented children out there whose parents don't have the means to pay their way. I am always happy to help those kids directly if needed, but more often than not the parents can't afford it because they are pieces of shite.
Example: paid hotel for a team member so she could travel with the team. Mom and dad were drunk as a skunk the whole weekend.
