I am working on a shelter dog now. She technically was only in the shelter for three days.

I’ve found it extremely difficult so far. Very smart and at her heart, she’s a good girl. But extremely stubborn and she has no impulse control to biting and nothing I’ve done has stopped it. Sure, 95# of it is play, but she hasn’t had the socialization to know that biting is not acceptable. She even will try and nibble on my chin and eyebrows. There’s only so many times I can put her in time out, stop playing, etc. And she gets very very “frick you” if I put her in timeout.

Luckily I start obedience training tomorrow so that should help. And being around more dogs

I have no regrets but I certainly was not prepared for this. Just sharing my experience so far.

I think most purebred animals have been inbred as hell. It's like adopting a member of the British royal family.

Go to local shelter, your parish & maybe city have one
Reach out to local rescues

We have had several rescues, 1 from a shelter & fostered a few
All have been excellent pets

Love mine more than all humans except 4. And that varies depending on how big of an arse the humans are acting.

The dog is solid gold.

We have two. One is half lab, half English pointer. Adopted him when he was four and we’ve had him for
five years. Absolutely the best dog we have ever owned. Second dog is half Catahoula. She was one when we got her and had a rough start in life. Very timid at first, but has fit right in and has become a normal dog over the last three years. Don’t hesitate.

Adopted Norman in October. Super loyal to my wife and all kids. He’s been skiddish towards me and other males with beards. He was rescued on the side of the road and I believe was beaten by a male. He’s come a long way towards warming up to me. Still won’t let me take him outside when Mom isn’t home. Although, he’ll go 7am to 5pm and not have any accidents or chew anything up. He just sleeps all day.

My dog from the pound is really sweet and well behaved. She’s almost 14 and will probably keep going

You never know what you are going to get DNA wise. Best to stick with a breed of dog that fits your lifestyle.

They taste a little more gamey, but you can't beat the value.

Mutts are the best dogs.

There’s a million pit bull mixes out there though. If it looks like a pit it is. At least part pit.

You occasionally find a mistake if you’re lucky. We ended up with a “Chi-weenie” with awesome coloring and temperament. No way that dog was supposed to be in a shelter. It ran away from somewhere but no chip, so he’s ours.

I have shelter dogs and they are fine. They seem to know you’ve saved them and are so happy and grateful. I’ve also had working line imported shepherds, but for pet purposes, will always choose to save a life. Now is the time, shelters are inundated and even the no-kills are killing. People are dumping in droves bc of this economy.

Got one a year ago and love it.

Dante’s Hope will let you try out a dog for a bit to make sure it’s a good fit. Also cover all the needed meds/surgery/chip for $250.

Do it

I have a purebred I paid a lot of and he’s an *sshole and spaz and have a free rescue mutt thats a year old and better behaved than the 7 yo purebred will ever be. Got her free as a puppy so shelter didn’t have to pay to spay her (which I did later)

OK, I foster a lot of dogs. Even "pit mixes".
From the hundreds of dogs I've been around over the past decade or so, every dog has the potential to being the "bestest dog ever". They really can be very loving. It's almost 100 % on how the dog is treated and somewhat trained on how he or she acts.
I can't say pure breeds are more this or less that. I've have good luck with health and bad luck with health. Never breed related.
I just walked my pit mixes( which they really don't look quite the pit look) in the trails at a nearby park. Just a wagging their tails and having a good walk" always using a leash of course.
Just be prepared if you get a puppy, they can be active. Very active. For up to 2 years or more.
I've ended up with so many "rejects" because people decide that little 6 week old puppy, is now a 50 pound jumpathon is too much to handle.
Remember, the dog will often take on the owners personality
