As a onetime Sears employee, I can tell you this is 1000% accurate. But in the 80s and 90s when the technology began to change how we do business, Sears did not have the foresight to take what they had and move forward. Sears at that time was focused on trying to compete with Walmart. Strange how things work out !

Sears had the infrastructure to do it, too. They had the call centers in place for phone orders. They had their own financing department. They had a substantial shipping/receiving department with a good relationship with the USPS. They even had a solid website early on in the internet's rise. They simply did not have the leadership, and as you said, the foresight, to pivot to online commerce. It will go down as one of the worst blunders in American business history.

Yep, they had just about anything, had many locations, and held sales pretty often. 50s, 60’s, 70s, early 80’s was the tits!

This is all correct. As I look back, and I left in early 1980, the prevailing attitude was “we’ve always do it this way.”
I once had a conversation with my boss about Walmart. I made an offhand comment that they might be a company to invest in. He told me point blank that that was not a good thing for a Sears employee to say to his boss !!!! Fast forward about 20 years and the president of the company I spent almost 30 years with was in town. We began talking about two of our competitors that had just merged. He told me he had bought some of their stock so he could get an annual report and learn more about them. Guess which company is still thriving ???!?

only because unless you lived in a major large city, it was the ONLY big chain store for the rest of the country to buy anything
sears was the original hardware store/ thrift store/ general merchandise store, and mail order catalog store
