It's a great idea. They should absolutely encourage residents to apply but the it shouldn't be a requirement. I'm willing to go as far as offer incentives for residents to who do apply and get hired. Maybe give them first choice of extra duty in the area.

They are on the right track. Just need to massage the proposal a little and see if they can make it work. You never know unless you try.

I think its a good idea to have both people who are from the community and people who are not. People who are from the community they police will see things different than someone who is not from the community. The community might be more forgiving to a policeman who is from there, which can be a good and bad thing, but having both would be much better than having all policeman from the community or all police who are not from the community.

How can you communicate effectively and police people... calm ppl down in a nonviolent manner when YOU YOURSELF have NEVER been exposed to the culture of these ppl... don't understand how these ppl live, speak, think, talk, joke, love, etc... YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND THEM PERIOD... I AS A BLACK WOMAN, RAISED POOR, HERE IN SHERWOOD FOREST I CAN'T GO TO AN AREA WHERE THE PPL SPK MOSTLY CREOLE FRENCH OR VIETNAMESE POLICE THEM TELL THEM HOW TO FIX THEIR COMMUNITY... I WILL BE LOST AND CONFUSED AND LIVES WILL BE LOST... it won't work. I thought we figured this out when Christopher Columbus and the other Christian settlers tried to enforce their way of life and beliefs on the Native Americans... didn't work out so well. Smh

As someone previously mentioned, NOPD tried this with desasturous results.

So? What's your point? Baton Rouge is not New Orleans. Just because something failed in one area, does not mean it can't thrive in another.

I don't know what NOPD tried but it's unfair to say because NOPD fricked it up that BRDP will suffer the same fate.

Point is, not everyone wants to live in a shite hole. People actually like to live in a decent area where property taxes aren't through the roof and infrastructure is reliable and can send their kids to decent schools. I'm aware BR isn't as bad as NOLA in some of those areas but that's why it didn't work in NO.

This topic makes me very angry.
To think that a cop may not help someone in need, a fireman may not run into a burning house, an EMT will not do their best to revive someone because they are not from the same neighborhood is insulting. It is f'ing disgusting.

I have family in the Fire Dept. When EMS gets a call they go too. I have heard some of the "tame" stories of what they see. What they have to do.
Which is probably not as bad what the police officers have to deal with.
They have been exposed to the culture & that is why they choose to raise their kids outside of EBR.

Do these people really think that if those 2 officers were from NRB & got the call about a man waving a gun in front of a store they would have said, "Triple S? Oh, that's just the CD man, he's harmless" & ignored it?

tldr: I still hate Fat Gary & I hope his magazine gets audited.

If you want to have the honor and privilege of patrolling NBR well then you'll need to also live there. Brilliant idea.

Works for me. I'm good with it.

Serious question. I live in a nice area of south Baton Rouge, have a professional job and an advanced degree.

Can I demand that only officers from my area, socio economic background and education level police my area so that they "understand" me? Because some hood rat ain't going to get that me and the nerd neighbor are having a spirited disagreement over a particle physics theory.*

Three men who resided in another parish just gave their lives to protect and to serve our city and our parish.

If there is not a better testimony than giving your life for your neighbor than I don't know what is.

What in the frick makes you think this would "thrive" in BR? You honestly think that adding a restriction that officers must live inside BR city limits is going to help them recruit more people?

Blacks are encouraged to apply now, but there's not enough that do to fill the needed positions without going outside the city limits.

Well with a starting salary of $32k ish and a residency requirement, you're practically guaranteeing your pool of applicants are going to have to live in north Baton Rouge. This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. My husband served with BRPD for 10 years and never lived in the city limits of Baton Rouge. You are ruling out very good people for very dumb reasons. See Montrell, Brad and Matt. It's hard to afford to live in Baton Rouge on that salary. And not to mention, a lot of officers don't want to live where they patrol.

yeah let's limit ourselves to an even smaller pool of potential recruits by doing this

makes lots of sense
