newsletter@artnet.com sends out a free, daily newsletter about what's happening in the art world.
Some of their stuff is totally wtf in style and prices. But it is, afterall, a free site, and it also covers more classic art work as well as statues, etc.
I get it daily but I may only read it weekly or biweekly. Sometimes for my amusement, sometimes because the name Basquiat meant nothing to me; now I know more about his work but I'm not sure, heck, I still don't appreciate it.
It does cover museum exhibits that are upcoming and that can make for more interesting vacations.

Agree. It is one of, if not the most, overblown things in society today.
Makes zero sense.

Money laundering?
Only person to hit the nail on the head. Two avenues for rich people to launder money and/or avoid taxes: art and real estate.

IMO, no piece of art is worth that (or even a small fraction of that)

I'll take Monet for that much, thanks.

How do they even determine the starting value for these things?

Looks like the graffiti under the I-10 bridge on highland.

Once you have a name or style that is "in" your work can literally be garbage and sell for millions. In elementary art class, there was a fairly thick book with paintings from other artists and I'll never forget one that stood out to me the most. It was a solid blue square.
It is "group think", a person may think a piece of art my be pure crap, but would never say that because so many others apparently think its great, but many of those people probably also think its crap, and it just gets perpetuated in a ever expanding circle. This is very common in the jazz music world where absolute garbage will be called called "fresh, innovative, etc" by a select few people and the next thing you know the performer is the greatest that ever lived.

I'm the same. Everytime I visit a city with a famous art museum, I try to go to it.
Never fails that the modern art section completely boggles my mind. I just don't get it. Don't think I ever will. It's like two people banging pots together and calling it music.
However, those giant canvasses of ancient battles painted hundreds of years ago? That's pretty awe-inspiring.

First rule of economics is "Things are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them" If someone is willing to part with $110M in exchange for that piece, then that's what it is worth.

Most great art is not appreciated by the masses until several generations later i.e. Van Gogh, Monet, Cezanne, Serat. Images or music or literature that is different than the status quo is always mocked by the hoi poi. With that said, i am not a big fan of Basquiat, but he did translate raw street art onto the canvass and was very good at creating hype arou d his personal life. And hype and marketing are as big a part of contemporary art as the painting or final product. Art is a refelction of modern society.

All that proves is this world is full of people of have more money than they have sense.

It is bigotry to think graffiti art is pretty much crap?
No. You missed my point, I think. The subtle bigotry of lowered expectations applied here would be assigning too high a value to something, due merely to the skin color (etc) of its creator.
If you couple that with virtue signaling, you get this Basquiat transaction, which would perplex Bastiat.

Modern art auctions are just money laundering/illicit purchase coverups.

Wow! I know a piece of shite that claims he’s worth $10B

Theres an old joke about art...
If it is not selling just raise the price

110.5 million?
He could go home and knock out 9 other ones like that and become an instant pre tax billionaire. Wouldn't be a bad afternoon's work.

Ok, but where is the great art today?

That thing is ugly and I don't understand it if there is some meaning to it. It looks like something your first-grade child would give you. You would act like it was great and trash it as soon as the kid went to take a dump. I wouldn't take that thing for free (unless I knew I could get 100+ million for it). People are insane.
