Joining the rarefied $100 million-plus club in a salesroom punctuated by periodic gasps from the crowd, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s powerful 1982 painting of a skull brought $110.5 million at Sotheby’s, to become the sixth most expensive work ever sold at auction. Only 10 other works have broken the $100 million mark.
“He’s now in the same league as Francis Bacon and Pablo Picasso,” said the dealer Jeffrey Deitch, an expert on Basquiat.
The sale of the painting, “Untitled,” made for a thrilling moment at Sotheby’s postwar and contemporary auction as at least four bidders on the phones and in the room sailed past the $60 million level at which the work — forged from oil stick and spray paint — had been guaranteed to sell by a third party.

It’s silly, no doubt, but the art world is pretty fascinating. I watched a documentary the other day on art collections, and ended up doing a few hours of reading on art pieces and where/how they derive their value.

I still think it’s retarded. But I appreciate it.

I always wonder if shite like this bothers the grind artist. I have a good friend who is extremely talented and lives one $650 original, $50 print at a time. He could probably shite a better painting than that, but he'd never say such a thing.

The question now....is Pablo Picasso within 6 degrees of separation from Francis Bacon???

Define “better”

Different styles of art require different skills and levels creativity. It also helps if you blow a bunch of dudes and get your name out there. At least that’s what I gathered from my one night crash course.

The art is wherever, but I love the film "Basquiat" with Jeffrey Wright. One of those movies that I watch every time it's on.

It’s a cool piece but paying 100 million for a Basquiat is the absolute height of virtue signaling

The artist is the DJ in Blondie's video for "Rapture".
