How would a rupture cause it to run to the parking lot. Doesn't federal law mandates a berm that can contain the entire contents of the tank.

I am guessing that it’s an explosive rupture that sprays liquid.

They’ve been watering it non-stop since it began leaking on Thursday. Might run out of water soon…

That was my thought too. Even without the issues with California reservoirs, dumping 1000s of gallons an hour for going on 48 hours, along with normal use, would put pressure on most any municipal water system.

What kind of blast are we talking here? If it were to explode.

The message was still not “if” but “when” a large-scale leak or explosion would occur — exactly what was relayed on Friday.

“This is going to happen unless some brilliant guy behind me here figures out how we can mitigate this incident,”
OCFA Division Chief Covey said at Friday’s press conference, alluding to the crews standing behind him.

Worse case, it blows the surrounding tanks as well. It might make sense to just let it leak out and avoid an explosion.

I get that.

I was just wondering how big the explosion would be in terms of distance and structures affected.

I see there is a neighborhood directly across the street. Would it wipe out the entire area, or just a portion of it?

The worst-case scenario is an uncontrolled explosion. “If you’ve ever seen videos of tank cars on a railroad track blowing up, and that fireball it puts out, and it blows half the tank car a half a mile down the train track, that’s the incident potential we are dealing with if this suffers a catastrophic failure,” Covey said.

LA times does lots of fear mongering over high pressure tank, bursting to a bleve, etc. Trouble is the aerial photo shows a flat roof tank probably not good for the pressure inside a can of Diet Coke. Tech term for that style of tank is Atmospheric. California peoples are full of poop

you state thousands of gallons per hour for 48 hours would overwhelm waste treatment. Its only got 7000 gallons in the tank!. Where would the other 93000 gallons come from in your scenario?
