I did all of that through baseball, basketball, and football through rec league
Rec leagues do not exist in the same way they did when we were all kids in all places.

My kids have a blast, having different experiences, playing different games, traveling to different places. Most of what we do is for them, we are just not hostage to it

My kids play rec soccer and baseball and it’s fine. Not old enough for football and no interest in basketball

This is the important thing that gets missed. I have no kids in travel sports and hope I never do. But, no one I know who does it thinks their kid is playing D1. They do it so their kids can interact with other kids like them and be involved in Team sports.
Nailed it. The travel ball hate here is OOC

I have buddies that take golf lessons. Is that not normal?
Are your "buddies" in the 9 to 12 year old range that pay for instructional lessons once a week year round?
I think you missed the point he was trying to make

I only think this is crazy if the parents can’t afford it and/or the kid doesn’t want to do it. I was involved in travel ball and private lessons as a kid and I fricking loved it.

Would a 9-12 year old taking piano lessons be weird?

No one here has a problem with the decisions you make for you kids either. Congrats on having a rec league that isn't full of trashy parents and kids who have no clue what is going on.

I played on a travel team that played 3 tournaments one year, all in LA. No asking other people to pay for our vacations through fundraising or outright asking for donations, no private lessons or coaches who drew a salary. It was pure

You don't believe a professional coach who played college baseball can be helpful in developing players?
Works outstanding for LSU.

Yep. Buddy of mine takes his 2 sons (12 and 9) to private pitching and hitting lessons with some former player/coach once a week pretty much year round. He wont tell me what it costs. I always give him shite about it. He thinks it is a completely normal and reasonable thing to do.
my daughter takes ballet, dance and tap lessons twice a week and performs in the Nutcracker every year..she also participates in a recital once a year.
Is that weird?

Expand on no clue what’s going on?

Not mine, they call him The Natural

My boy played rec until he was just too good, then it was time to move on. No big deal, some kids just pick up a particular sport faster than others.

used to think the same thing until my son got to high school. Most of the kids that get substantial playing time have had years worth of lessons and has played travel/select ball. They are ahead physically and mentally.
This comment will get bashed but it's the truth. If your kid wants to play in high school and not just sit the bench for 3 or 4 years, i strongly recommend lessons and some travel ball
Did playing travel ball make them the better players
Or
Does the better players just tend to gravitate to travel ball?

Typically, at least in my experience, the people who say what you quoted are usually just mad that somebody else did something in a different way then they would have done
People these days are so narcissistic. I blame social media

No, I was responding to the poster comparing golf lessons for his friends to 9-12 year olds taking year round hitting lessons

Sounds like you werent good enough to be on a AAA or Majors team...
What were yall? All-Stars or AA?

I’m around baseball a lot. I’m heavily involved with the ‘travel ball’ age and I haven’t seen or talked to one person that sends their kids to training/lessons year round... I’m sure it’s possible, but I think that this is just an OT exaggeration. Go figure
I will say, however, that I know one particular parent that I went to school with who NEVER played baseball, but his oldest son is a pretty good player.. this retard has his son playing 10-11 months out of the year which is absolutely retarded
