Yep. Buddy of mine takes his 2 sons (12 and 9) to private pitching and hitting lessons with some former player/coach once a week pretty much year round. He wont tell me what it costs. I always give him shite about it. He thinks it is a completely normal and reasonable thing to do.

My buddy is just a former HS asst coach. He gets $60/hour for pitching and hitting lessons.

This comment will get bashed but it's the truth. If your kid wants to play in high school and not just sit the bench for 3 or 4 years, i strongly recommend lessons and some travel ball

Id rather my kid spend time on something that will benefit him beyond extra at bats in high school.

My son, 12, is ending his travel ball career this year. He ended with, I think, 31 medals, two trophies, and a ring.

He’s taking his talents to his 7-12th boys school where he’s destined to set many records. Football, soccer, track, lacrosse, sailing, and maybe basketball.

Travel ball did him well though, he’s got grit and he’s ready to play all of the sports they’ll let him. Can he get 4 varsity letters his freshman year, maybe not...but he’s sure going to try.

Here he is Tuesday night at the regional private school track meet.

If that’s what you enjoy. Roasting every weekend so your kid can get a 3rd place ring

I know people who spend that on Golf, Hunting, Fishing and LSU Sports.

I can think of no worse way of spending a weekend than baking in the summer sun for 2 days watching stage parents yelling at their kids and then drinking away my sorrows with people I’d otherwise not associate with next to a crappy pool at a marginal hotel all evening knowing full well I’m pissing away thousands of dollars because there’s no way my kid will actually make it to the “next level”

I agree but my parents did that for "All Stars" before travel ball was a thing. They didn't do it because they thought I was going pro but they did it because their kids enjoyed it. Personally it sounds like hell to me.

Friend at work says his daughter Bayli has her own hitting corch:
The son Trysten has his own pitching coach

A lady work says her daughter Bayleighh has an in-field fielding coach.

Bayli and Bayleighh are on the same team

I agree 100%. Junior probably disagrees, though.
Again, as long as the kid wants to do it, you can afford it, and it isn't taking away from academics, i don't see the problem.

I love my kids and I hope they play a ton of sports and I’ll enjoy watching them, but I would like to do other stuff with them besides sitting in a folding chair and eating fast food every weekend

This is the important thing that gets missed. I have no kids in travel sports and hope I never do. But, no one I know who does it thinks their kid is playing D1. They do it so their kids can interact with other kids like them and be involved in Team sports.

It’s to build up their personal belief. They learn to thrive under adversity and overcome self doubt. I think it was all worth it.

Fun fact. I had a former MLB pitcher that coached me in pitching up until I started high school. Enormously helpful and taught me a wicked slider.

He was our next door neighbor and would coach me in the back yard in exchange for beers out of our garage fridge. Even helped my dad build us a pitching mound out back.

The amount of hate that ‘travel ball’ gets on the OT is absurd..

On the first page, I forgot who it was, but they’re ripping on parents for sending their kid to lessons?? For frick’s sake, you can go take lessons for anything. Golf, piano, swimming, math, driving, etc.. where is the hate for those parents??

I’ll get bashed for this, but it’s almost like people are jealous.

his board is enamored with the travel ball lifestyleMy buddy told me best.... “a kid should learn a curve ball the same way he learns about sex. From some retarded 12 year old on the playground who doesn’t know what the hell hes talking about.”

Right. However, at this stage in my life I will just say that I become intimately involved with almost exclusively women that have been married or in some cases still married and can tell you that's why no one you know is throwing curveballs for money...

Sometimes, it's not about what YOU enjoy. Kids are only kids for a little while...let them have fun
