a couple years ago there was a (serious) article about how some dude paid off like 200k in student loan debt, but his parents bought him a 400k house and a car or something. there are a lot of social media posts like that too.

t helps when satire has some kind of noticeable humor involved. I just don't find this humorous - at all.

Please tell me the kid at least paid the $11k in debt off with that $500k gift.

If not, it just proves how worthless an Art History degree is.

I'm not sure if Jim is a great negotiator or if his dad is a terrible negotiator.

Hey Dad, I'll pay my $11,000 in student debt and you buy me a $4,000,000 condo and start my savings with $500,000.

If he got a $500K gift then he doesn’t have a student loan to pay anymore.

I doubt Dad is a dummy. He probably wanted to buy a condo as an investment property anyway, and is letting his kid live there rent free.

Buy yeah, it's not much of a story. Dad is clearly still funding everything. Maybe that's the point of the story? To point out the absurdity of the situation.

The father didn’t gift the son a NYC condo and $500,000. He gifted his son a limitless supply of pu$$y. And NYC may have the highest concentration of quality stuff on the planet.
we don’t know what he looks like though… he could be so short and unmanly that a billion dollars won’t help him

No he doesn’t. He lives comfortably on a one time gift of 500k plus a paid for 4 million dollar condo, supplemented by a 50k salary.

I hope the dad is paying gift taxes on all this - otherwise son just put him in a bit of a bind with the IRS.

He is still under the lifetime limit of gifting so none are due. With that said, someone with that much money most definitely has the proper vehicles in place to avoid most gift/estate taxes.

Why does he have any debt if he was given $500k

I'd assume because the $500K is generating far more than the interest rate on the $11K student debt is. Why pay off free money?
