True. But… it’s a lot safer and insurance costs are probably half. Maybe 30 minute longer drive from picayune than from lake view.

Serious answer, move to Mississippi and drive in

1. That commute absolutely sucks.

2. It makes enjoying the city’s restaurants, bars, and entertainment a complete chore.

Not shitting on MS, but it’s not a place for young people.

Do you have kids or are you planning to have any? There is one private school in St Bernard, Prompt Succor that goes to 7th grade. After that you’re commuting them to the city. I grew up here and went to public school. My kids are going into highschool and we’re moving to a place where they can go to decent public schools.

It’s a shame too because St. Bernard is trying but no one can escape demographics…still a few decent elementary schools though

Aren’t Lakeview and Lake Vista in Orleans Parish where taxes and insurance are ungodly expensive?
insurance is expensive everywhere so that does not change depending on which parish you are in. The property taxes in New Orleans are definitely more expensive than Jefferson, but if you are looking in Old Metairie, the houses per square foot are more expensive than in Lakeview/vista/Lakefront so any increase in taxes is negligible.

ETA: flooding close to the lake is pretty rare.

Looked at houses on the lake in Slidell last weekend but I kinda don’t want a 30 minute commute.

Moved from Chalmette going on 3 years ago after growing up there and moving back there after my time in the USMC 04-08. Moved to Slidell in the Indian Village neighborhood and wished we would have done it sooner. Primarily moved due to the school system, and getting in Northshore high specifically, but if kids and school aren't a concern I'd still look at Slidell.

Old Arabi bar is a good scene but outside of that bars in Chalmette live up to the Chalmette reputation. Slidell has so much more to do, old town is a great spot for night life. It is a 30 minute drive but rarely will you see traffic except in a rare accident, so that 30 minutes is like clockwork.

Slidell pretty much North Chalmette these days with all the transplants like myself but we love it. We live on 2.5 acres outside city limits close to the west pearl, so far cry from having neighbors right on top of us like Chalmette.

Good luck in your search!

Curiosity finally got the best of me and I looked up Arabi Food Store and found out it was first opened in 1924, so by the time I was going to elementary school right across the street in the 3rd grade, it had been open for 36 years.

Guess they must be doing something right..........

Really depends on your lifestyle. If you like the outdoors more, Arabi/Chalmette isn’t an awful place to live.

If you enjoy more of a nightlife scene, Old Metairie or Slidell 100%. I moved to Old Metairie and I’ll have a hard time ever leaving

If you can afford the insurance, I say go for it. St. Bernard represents an incredible value compared to other areas in Greater New Orleans. There’s a reason for that, like with everything. But as a whole, the area is fairly safe, has all the stores and food you’ll really need, and is close to the city for the things you can’t get there. A lot of good people down in that area. A solid, blue collar, old school New Orleans area kind of place.

St. Bernard is not bad. Arabi is a bit pricey, especially the new construction.

Lexington
Corinne
Jumonville North
Emilie Oaks

Just to name a few

Same for us. My wife and I moved into what was originally intended to be a starter home. Between interest rates and how much we love the area we’re now significantly more likely to expand than sell.

He/she had mentioned having land and dogs so it and actually Lacombe came to mind for commute purposes.

Agreed, I actually thought of that as well.

The only downside of Lacombe are the public schools.

Old Arabi is the best choice. Just keep in mind that there are only 2 somewhat functional bridges that connect NO to Arabi/St. Bernard and when one goes out of service (happens often) its a cluster of massive proportions. Plus, the St. Claude Bridge is slated to be demolished and a new bridge installed in its place (who knows when work will get started), and when that finally happens it will be a nightmare to try to get out of anywhere in St. Bernard to NO. With that caveat, Old Arabi has seen a nice re-invigoration, with a lot of businesses moving from the Bywater/Marigny area in NO to it which has led to some really nice restaurants/bars and art installations.
