Drug war quote:
You understand what I'm saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.”
John Ehrlichman (Nixon’s Primary Policy Advisor)
We spend billions and have done nothing but create billionaire cartels (Drug use has not declined at all)
Ehrlichsman
Great simple no BS story on this is the Adam ruins everything show on this.
If we are going to start redoing policing, we can start with this bulllshit. This should have been defunded decades ago

It blows my mind the money we waste locking people up for drugs.
It would save this country tons of money if they just highly regulated the over the counter sale of narcotics and actually profited from the taxes.

Glad you reference an unbiased, intellectual source like this to back up your post.

I’m not for the legalization of every drug known to man, but damn if I don’t inch closer to it every day after hearing, learning, and realizing how the drug war has lead to no knock warrants, civil asset forfeiture, and basic trampling of the 4th amendment.

Yeah man, like single parent households would just disappear along with poverty and illiteracy.
And bro, we’d like lower crime everywhere man. Our deficit would like go away and you know dude, like, everyone would go get a job and get off of entitlements.
Are you high?

Are you saying you want drug laws to go away, or you want the concerted effort by police to crack down to go away?

I bet that Nixon guy was a white male too. Without him We’d have racial harmony

Out of 2.2 million prisoners there are around 47,000 serving time for possession.
Try again, possession of drugs isn’t causing mass incarceration.

If you want to riot and protest against anything it's the war on drugs and single motherhood rates in poverty.

Blacks make up 37.5% of prisoners
If we immediately released everyone in jail for drugs
Blacks would make up 37% of all prisoners

Agree
One more step in the wrong direction. Pot is no big deal, however it’ll just become a starter drug.

You neglected to mention those incarcerated for distribution, trafficking, crimes related to drug addiction, gang violence related to turf wars, and crimes committed by felons who couldn’t get a straight job due to prior drug convictions....

The annual cost to incarcerate a prisoner in LA is $17k
40k x 17k = $680M tax payer dollars
Thats only using the LA cost which is significantly cheaper than other states

They account for another 200,000. Most of these convictions are plea deals for much worse crimes.
The root cause of other violent crime is an interesting thought though. I suspect that people will find something else to fight over, but I could be wrong. I’m not sure there is anything to support either hypothesis.

So we'd remove the option from the state to sentence criminals to less time for worse offenses? That sounds awful
