We are currently warehousing the single largest prison population in the recorded history of human civilization. It’s amazing these tough on crime wankers need any further evidence to believe we have a problem that goes well beyond black committing all this crime.

agreed. But it has to be an honest discussion. I have no problem with the idea. I just don't think its the only answer. If its an answer at all.

I’m open to this possibility. I think it’s a classic chicken and egg problem. Did incarceration respond to a rise in crime or did a change in laws cause a rise in crime?
I just don’t see how a change in drug laws in the 80s caused crime to rise in the 60s.

Violent crime doubled between 1960 and 1970
Then doubled again between 1970 and 1980
I’m trying to figure out what this had to do with the war on drugs in the 1980s or Clinton signing the crime bill in the 90s.
Seems like these things were a response to rising crime. Not the other way around.

LBJ's war on poverty started in 1964...perhaps these were the early salvos in a rise in fatherless homes.
You also had civil rights movements/protests heating up, protesting an unpopular war, people coming back "changed" from that war, a global pandemic, a global energy crisis, and a rise in inflation, interest rates, and unemployment all in that time period.

War on drugs started in 1971 with Nixon.
Edit to add:
Check out the Wiki for civil unrest in the USA. The 60s through the 70s saw lots of unrest. Numbers you don't really see again until the last half decade or so.

There's a documentary on YouTube called "13th" after the 13th Amendment. They use the John Ehrlichman interview in the doc. Good watch. Gives you a perspective on the "war on drugs" and the "war on crime" initiatives that I don't think most people fully understand. Particularly how they impacted the black community.
