I was number 333. I was already classified as 4F due to hearing loss. I was 18 at the time of the draft.

Many of you have seen this but some have not. It’s almost surreal to think about now. Even the video quality has a sterile, Twilight Zone feel to it. I was born on December 30, which was the third picked date. Fortunately, I was not born until 1970. I can’t imagine the anxiety for the teenagers and their families.
This should be required watching in HS today. It’s very sobering.

I was in junior high of a 7-12 high school when it went away and you could feel the relief when the draft stopped.

Was in the Lottery while at college (yeah, Boomer old). My friend next door and I were in the Naval ROTC and both wanted to get out of it.

Draft Day came.

My number was 81. News was that the draft numbers would probably reach 50 at best (worst). So I was relieved. Then I heard a blood curdaling scream! My friend's number was called. Number 2.

Oh, the good old days! (sacarsm dripping)

I would have been drafted in 1970. I share a birthday with a friend from old Metairie. He was older than me and got drafted. He spent the Vietnam war in the Navy in Hawaii.

My older brother who is 68 got his lottery number even though the war was essentially over when he turned 18, just in case.

I was in the 2nd draft lottery 1970
#172 they didn’t call, I didn’t serve.
I was 18yr. Not able to vote or drink alcohol but old enough to draw straws for military service. I have never bought a state lottery ticket and never will.

I'd have been drafted. Would have had to fake asthma even though it didn't stop me from playing football.

My dad saw war coming so enlisted in the Navy in 1940 because he knew he would be drafted and didn't want to walk everywhere. In the 1960's the chemical plant where he worked introduced new mechanical tech had had worked on 20 years earlier.

As for me, I was around 170 in the last year the anyone was drafted.

Bone spurs would've kept me out.

Seriousness aside, friend of mine lived in MN and had just graduated. Think he was married by then, also. Not sure about the timing, but he got drafted and then got sent to West Germany. Had a blast.

I remember that.

I looked up: my draft lottery number (186). The highest number called that year was 95 — and by then the draft had already ended — so our whole age group was never at risk. My classification back then was 1H, which basically meant “not being processed.” Interesting snapshot of that era.
